I have three pearl danios in quarantine right now, and I noticed something I've never seen on pearl danios before: What looks like two fairly long, very fine barbels at each end of their mouth.

Its hard to get them to sit still, but I noticed one of them sitting still at the bottom of the tank and moved in for a closer look thinking it was sick or dead. I noticed what looked like long fine hairs on either side of his head just before he got spooked by me poking my face by him, and now they won't sit still for me to be sure if I saw what I think I saw. My eyes aren't good enough to tell anything while they're darting around, so I've turned the lights off in the room in hopes that they'll settle down again so I can get another close look.

Any ideas? They look like any other pearl danio I've seen - pink, they've got some a tiny metallic red line at the top of their body and a more diffuse red down their sides and into the caudal fin. Are these "barbels" normal, and I just have never noticed them on active, is it abnormal, or are they another fish entirely?

Edited: Searched again with different terms and did find the same question already answered. Pretty surprised to find danios have barbels - I had zebra danios forever and never noticed them on fish or in pictures.

Yep pearl danio's do have barbels/whiskers, it usually isn't that obvious on younger specimens, but their barbels will become increasingly obvious as they grow larger- long barbels/whiskers which are kept out all the time are a good sign of healthy pearl danios  .
