even our own hearing is based on pressure changes. so makes sense a fish can "hear" even if they dont have ears...thats what the lateral line is for. kinda the same, works on a similar principle as our ears detecting pressure waves...and water conducts sound tens of times faster than air. of course im over simplifying it but...

"tens of times" is bit of an overexaggeration. The speed of sound in air at sea pressure is 343 m/s, the speed of sound in water at 20* C is 1484 m/s -- about 4.3 times faster.
