I have just purchased two parrott fish for my community tank...and all they have done is hide!...is this normal?
One of them will come out every so often but last night one of my mollies took a liking to him and wouldnt leave him alone, it looked as if he was just 'cleaning' the parrotts side, it didnt look at all aggressive but i did take the step of isolating the mollie as he was the only one doing it...is this normal?
I cant seem to find any information about the behaviour of parrots so please help

regards ali

Welcome to the forum! I'm glad you are here. There are a couple of parrot fish owners here that may be able to share their experiences with you - be patient, sometimes replys on a Sunday can be slow... :)

:hi: alielise30!

I know next to nothing about parrot fish, but I hope you get your questions answered. :)

Hi alielise30 :)

Welcome to the forum. :flowers:

I'll move your thread to a place where it will be seen by members who might know more about them.

Why not start a new thread in the newbie forum to introduce yourself to everyone?

Parrot Cichlids seem to be somewhat shy upon first introducing them to the tank. hiding when any activity is present outside the tank. after some time though, they will overcome this shyness. some report this to take less than a week, while others say it may take up to a couple of months.be patient with your new fish they will eventually come out. They also are generally friendly but can be territorial. They dig too. gl with your fish

I have 2 "naturally" colored parrot fish that are in a tank with a native rock bass from the local lake( I donno if thats illegal here in the US) and they hide while the bass gets his riegn as the leader but they go back and fight their way to own the open space of the aquarium and the "rock". They cannot close their mouths and need the flakes to sink so they can suck up the food.
Since they are man made hyvbrids they cannot breed but i have heard recently of a convict x parrot that breeds???? if you have info on this TELL ME thanks

yeah, parrotfish are a cross between who knoe what, i don't think even CA knows! i don't think anything about them is natrual

Hello, and welcome to the forum!
We used to have a 4 1/2 inch parrotfish, but we returned it to our LFS because it was way too aggressive and territorial-we just couldn't let him beat up our other fish. Perhaps if the parrots are the only fish in your tank, and it's a large tank, you won't have this problem-but it's just a warning. Lots of people say their parrots are friendly and gently, but all parrots have different temperaments and personalities-probably because they're hybrids. As far as your parrots hiding, ours did the same thing for the first few days or so, but soon settled in well enough to rule the tank. If you do want tankmates for your pair, we'd recommend something pretty fast, like silver dollars.
Foodwise, ours ate tropical flake food and shrimp pellets off the bottom, and sometimes some frozen bloodworms as a treat.
That's about all that comes to mind at the moment, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Best wishes with your parrots!

Hi there!!!

A couple things I'd like to mention:

1) Make sure you have hiding places, caves, houses, etc. BPs will move into more-or-less one house, but they will try to own them all  . They need a little place to call their own and to hide from the other fish.

2) Feed them a few times a day because they are rather "slow" eaters. By this I mean that in the time it takes an Angel to eat a good meal, the Parrots (if they can't close thier mouths) will not have gotten as much. Usually :S

3) Mine absolutely ADOR tubifex worms. They go MAD overthem.

I also would like to comment about the Silver Dollars as being good tank mates. I personally don't think they are good co-habitants especially if you happen to have a BP that's a little more annory. Silver Dollars can get really stressed from being chased all over the tank :/ JMHO! Also, BPs have different temperments NOT because they are a hybrid, but just BECAUSE. Not to sound mean, but all fish are different.

Whenever I introduce a new fish to my tank they getted pecked at by more-or-less ALL the fish in the tank. It's sort of a "pecking order" if you will. They are just showing the newcomer who's boss and who's vice-boss and down the line. Maybe your newbie is just a little scared. He/she will come out of it!!

Good Luck,

Silver
