I've seen an orange parrotfish in the local stockist. I'm interested but I've never come across them before. Anyone got any ideas on what they are like to keep? e.g temperment, habbits, eating patterns, water pref's etc.

Hi - you know, a lot a people don't like the idea of parrot fish coz they're a hybrid, especially bred for selling and they're not a natural fish. I really can't help you about keeping them, the only thing I know about them is that they're cichlids and being that, quite tempramental. Once I inadvertedly bought cichlid hybrids (auloncara marbles) but I would never knowingly buy hybrids. Presonally I don't agree with "creating" fish just to make money out of them, but that is my personal feeling. I'm sure someone on the forum will be able to help you and supply more info on parrots.

Cichlidmaster jumps on his soapbox.....

First, if you haven't bought it...please don't!!!!

They are indeed hybrids. A cross between a red devil and a gold severum.

They were created simply to make money and for no other reason.

I will give you some answers to your question though because thats what were here for....

Food requirements:

Any standard cichlid flake will do. You may supplement this with occassional feedings of live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms or black worms. Please stay away from tubifex as these are potentially dangerous to your fish due to harmful bacterial problems.

Temprament:

Well given the fact they are crossed with a red devil and a gold severum, I would say they do have the potential to be aggressive, but I have heard from owners who say they are not to bad.

Water paramenters:

6.8 - 7.6 would suffice. The two fish that were crossed to make up this fish come from these types of waters.

Now the potential problems of this fish:

Has to compete to get it's share of food due to the grotesque shape of it's mouth.

Hard time swimming due to it's grotesque body shape, this fish can also have a problem with it's swim bladder for this same reason.

Cichlidmaster jumps down off his soapbox....

By all means if you like this fish, then buy it...I simply state the obvious reasons not to buy it....the main one being...with soooooo many natural species available to choose from why would anyone want to buy a frankenfish created by Dr. Frankenfish to line his pockets with your hard earned money.

The only way to stop unscrupulous people like this is to NOT buy their product!!!!

Thanks for the advice. I was quite unaware of the fact that they are bred for cash. It has put me off some what and I don't think i'll be going back to that aquarium to buy fish!!!

Hi
I kept 2 parrot fish for 3 months, i had to take them back to the shop in the end.
In my opinion they dont behave like normal fish, they seem to of be mentally scared, by man i had them in my 50 gallon tank, for 2 months, they hid for about a month, and when they did come out they chased my other fish constantly, and they ate a couple of my smaller fish, so i had to move them to another tank, where they where on there own, they never came out up there either, they where so shy and timmid, so i thought it was best to take them back to the shop.
I think it is so crewl how man can exploit such innocent creatures, there is know need for it and it is completely crewl, they go through so much suffering to be dyed that orange colour and they are so deformed, they cant even swim properly, it is so crewl, i feel ashamed to be human sometimes,
