Hi. I recently posted a question about my parrot fish digging up the gravel and was told thats the way it is which was fine...well not fine but thats life  . The problem i am having now is that one of them is at one end of the tank (6'x2'x1.5') and when i put my hand in to replace moved ornaments, or when other fish (another parrot and 6 silver dollars) go to that end he attackes me/them.
First question .. do they have teeth ?
Second question .. could it have laid eggs ? if so how would i know ?

Many thanks Alan

That's how my male gets when there are eggs in his cave, kinda protecting his girl and kids I suppose.

I've been bitten by my male, though he's still only 4inches so it wasn't painfull, just like being pinched. Don't think they'd draw blood... or I hope, LOL! I don't know loads about them, but i'm sure someone will reply soon - or maybe ask for this to be moved to the Hybrid forum??

There's nothing wrong with it.....just made me laugh out loud :look:

Good luck with your killer fishy.....did you find out if they have teeth?

All cichlids share a common feature that some saltwater fish such as wrasses and parrotfish have and that is a well-developed pharyngeal set of teeth that are in the throat, along with their regular teeth.

I don't know exactly how accurate a source it is... but it appeared after a quick bit of googling using the term 'Freshwater parrot fish teeth' lol.

I've had a pair of parrot ciclids for about 3 years, they are now about 25 cm long and have become very aggressive. They have actually broken the skin on my hand with their tiny teeth when I was cleaning their 300 liter tank!

yes the behavier is common so dont worry, like someone else has said its just him protecting the eggs which have been laid somewhere. as for them having teeth then you dont have a problem there. they dont

hope this helps

BPs like most large cichlids actually do have teeth although the way BP's mouths are shaped they cant really do much damage with them. BP's with fully functioning mouths can though. My King Kong BP has drawn blood several times.

my previous pair of Kong Bp's could easily break the skin and
would cause me to bleed during the time i'd clean their tank :p
So yes they do have teeth and do bite :p
