but what do the L and 3 digit number mean when discussing plecos or pl*co as some call them. I saw the thread discussing the *. pretty cool. I am assuming it is some sort of ID for the fish. if you could explain thanks.

there are simply a lot of plecs discovered and there is something like a new species discovered every week so rather than trying to give them all common names straight away, there given an L-number and some are given a common name as well at a later date.
