and found my 5x2x2 occupants in just ~4" of water, both filters pumping air, powerhead spinning in thin air and my Rena 300W Smartheater well above the water level!

First thought was the tank glass has structurally failed, but then I saw the FX5 out-hose on the floor, having come loose from the rubber connector that joins it to my 22mm elbow mod.

Fish have had ~100l of fresh water, but now I'm waiting on the immersion heater to get soem more hot water. Thankfully, nobody looks the worse for wear and it could have happened anytime from 0900. Makes me wonder how my oxygen was left, as an electric failure that would stop the rippling has always been my biggest fear, been thinking about a UPS for ages.

erp, i think i posted the other day that filter pipe failure is more common than a cracked tank :/ what a pain in the rear! Im sure the oxygen levels are fine, that sort of surface area is more than enough without a ripple.

Yes, I would be more worried about the filter bacteria dying than oxygen levels unless the tank was painfully overstocked.

I wonder if there is such a thing as an alarm that would alert you when the water falls below a certain level?

Would not be surprised if there was, if not would not be an impossible build. Just look at how the valves in cistern for your toilet work, hard part would be how to have it alert you when triggered

Sorry to hear this but glad the fish look ok, after the mishaps my end over the past 48 hours I know how you feel when something like this happens.

Yes there is :)

You have such a sensor in your car :)

Not my car!!!!

I am guessing fuel gauge

No alarm! Just a gauge.

There must be some kind of alarm like that out there for some purpose. I was just wondering if there was one that could be used in an aquarium.

Does a little red light not go on when you are low on fuel? There is your alarm, could be audible if it was a buzzer or speaker instead of a light

Nope, no light! No buzzer. Just a gauge to look at to see how much fuel is in the tank!

What car do you have! Still you get the idea how it might be done?

Everything is finally returning to normal after a crazy afternoon, albeit my Synodontis decora is still not back in his/her usual daytime roost and that means my other bottom dwellers (Synodontis bricahrdi; Lionhead Cichlids; Panda Garra; Indian Red Tail Squirrel Loach) are trying to sort out which hiding place they can have at least in the short term!

The tank is not that havily stocked these days, but being fastwater riverine fish, their oxygen needs are relatively high. Plenty of Prime added to the fresh water, but I will need to check ammonia and nitratite levels regularly over the next week, just in case of any bacteria colony die off.
