Can I have just one Angel fish, or do I have to have a pair, I have been researching for quite some time, but not getting clear answers, been told if I intoduce an angel after the other fish there is less chance of it been teritorial. but I was also told they have life long mates. I have a mixed community tank(mainly small tetras) I would like to have one Angel fish, who will stand out amoung the crowd. But I dont want an unhappy fish.so I need an expert to say if they are happy without a mate?
And are there types of Angels which are easier to keep than others?

You can have 1 angel, though they do seem to do better in groups, that's how they exist in the wild. Some angels get territorial, some don't. It's an individual personality issue, some can be real aggressive, others are totally mellow. Chances are a little better if you introduce it last, more so if it is younger. There really is no telling what the personality will be until it matures.

Angels don't have lifelong mates, they repair if a pair is split up, or once in a while do it on their own in a larger tank. Seperating angel pairs & repairing is a common breeding practice.

The most important thing is having a large enough tank. Angels need vertical space, a tank with 18" of height is minimum for keeping one long term, as well as 10 gallons of tank for that one fish. Depending on the fish you already have, I would say a 29 gallon would be the minimum tank size you need to have right now to keep one angel.

All angels are pretty much the same to keep with the exception of altums. They are mostly wild caught, require specific water parameters very similar to breeding discus. They best thing to do if you want a healthy fish is to avoid the corporate owned pet shops, look for a smaller independently owned shop. They charge a little more, but they get in healthier fish.
