Overstocked?

Hi,

I was just wondering whether my Tank is overstocked? I have a Rena Prisma 60 (50Ltr) tank which is housing 4 Corys (1 albino, 1 bronze and 2 pepper) 2 male guppys, 5 neon tetras and 1 x-ray tetra. I clen my tank weekly (20-25% water chage). My water stats are good.

I was just wondering what people think.

As far as water quality goes you are overstocked, but with a weekly 20-25% change your water chem. should be ok. IF you dont plan on reducing this stocking load I would get a second filter. And never clean both filters at the same time.

As far as territory goes, you couuld be overstocked; I would watch the fish's behavior and decided if there are any territory problems...

Your stocking will be fine aslong as you do keep up the maintenance. your fish are all small and will pretty much stay that way so its ok your a lil over on the stocking.

Perhaps I was confusing....your water stats are good because of your weekly change (regarding nitrite accumulation),,,I would be concerned about the water quality(ammonia) after a filter clean/change with the amount of fish in that tank. I however, under stock most of my tanks, I feel the average tank (one inch per gallon) is overstocked, especially considering fish territory requirements...I feed my fish VERY lightly a day before filter change/cleaning and keep feeding very light for one-two days after the filter change.

Plus, the fish release hormones into the water that reduce the growth rates of other fish, water changes can help….But this is ONE reason I feel many tanks are overstocked based on the common stocking rules.

I should add that I would consider your tank barely overstocked and with good maintenance you wont need to worry...

...good filtering, regular water changes, enough space for timid fish to hide and you should be fine

your not overstocked. unfortunately the stocking is all wrong though.

1 Albino Cory < you need 3 minimum
1 Bronze Cory < you need 3 minimum as theyre sociable fish
2 Peppered Corys < you need 3 minimum

The cories should be ok though, the albino should stick with the bronze. so dont worry too much bout the cories. Beware, each cory will get about 2.5"

1 X-Ray Tetras < A huge, no no! These are schooling fish, you may find he will be very lonely and hide away, theyre should have been 5 minimum, but you cant add to the tank.

5 Neon Tetras < Thats fine

2 Male Guppys < You may see aggression between the guppies, male guppies dont get along unless kept in 5's.

If the tank is running smoothly, then dont worry bout what i said. my only huge reccomendation is to return or find the xray tetra a new home.

well, bronze and albino will. but peppered will not school with the aenaeus cories the same way as theyre own kind do.

Its better to have 3 minimum of each species of cory, some suggest 6 is the bare minimum, but i disagree with that.

ive only got 2 cory's atm i was going to get one today but didnt want it sitting in my car in the sun.......poor thing would of boiled in the bag
