I have just got five amano shrimps, which are very entertaining and constantly cruise round the tank investigating everything and picking up invisible stuff with their little claws. I had read that they can rarely survive on just tank algae (of which I have only a small amount) so I got some little algae wafers to feed them. Anyway, I broke one wafer into four pieces and dropped it in the tank... it looked such a tiny amount when I put it in, but then the shrimp grabbed the pieces and carried them off to eat them... hours later they were STILL holding the pieces and eating them, they were so big for them!
I don't want to overfeed the shrimp, yet I am not sure how much I should be supplementing their diet. They don't take the flake food I feed my other fish because the fish grab virtually all of it before it hits the bottom of the tank.
So what is the "right" amount to feed five shrimp?

Hmmm? Good question, I would like to know as well. I will be keeping some ghost shrimp soon.

Give them Shrimp pellets, not the kind for fish, but pellets made for ornamental shrimp

i put shrimp pellets in and they ignore those a run off with a catfish pellet

As far as my experiences have gone, shrimp aren't like fish in the sense that they will eat till they die. Generally I hear you're supposed to feed your shrimps treats in amounts that they can finish in about an hour or two. So far I have had no problems while sticking to these times, but I will leave certain things like a hunk of cucumber or zucchini in for quite a bit longer. That sounds a little weird that they ignore the shrimp food... which one are you using? I use the hikari shrimp cuisine and everyone loves it. It contains astaxanthin, which helps bring out those natural Colors a bit brighter. Especially the blue, red, and yellow colors.
