I got up this morning and found I had abit of a problem, It seems my Pangasius (15inch long) has had another mad dash around the tank breaking the heater (the bottom smashed off) knocking the filter over and in the process my female red-finned shark has got damaged some how, then within a couple of hours he'd died (RIP). What I would now like to do is get rid of my pangasius to a bigger home at the moment he's in a 4foot tank and was wondering how everyone else gets rid of there fish that have out grown there tank?

Not meaning to sound as though I'm preaching to you, but you should have done your homework on the species you buy. Pengasius cats, in fact a lot of cats do outgrow their existing tanks. PC are very well known for their skittishness and are very nervous fish. Their attraction is that they look like sharks! What I would suggest to you is to ask your lfs if they will take it from you otherwise advertise it in your local paper. Whatever you do don't kill it.

I was given the fish because my friends tank got a crack in it and I was new to it a the time 6-7 years ago I do know always check things like that out now and there was never a question about killing him why do you thing I'm on here asking advice from people not trying to sound flippent or anything

Try finding your nearest SEA LIFE CENTRE,many of these have freshwater displays and may be able to take him for you if not try any local zoos,i had 4 tinfoil barbs which although not too big were starving all my other fish and had to go,they were donated to Colchester zoo via a lfs where they are now in a huge tank with many other tinfoils.

Thanks for that CFC I think that would be a top idea for him let him be free in a much larger set up I'm going to get onto it straight away

There was no offence intended in my answer to you tdnp. It's just that I have spoken to too many an aquarist who think, what do I do with my fish now that it got too big. Nobody wants it and its too big for me to keep. Easiest option........ Sorry if you were offended, but there was no intention to cause offence and I apologise if you felt that way. :*)

It's not nice too be preached too after a death in the tank, So I think the lesson to be learnt is don't preach until you know the facts and don't rub someone nose in it after a death, this said apology accepted

Once again Cheers CFC you advice was spot on, I e-mailed Chester Zoo who got back to me with a phone number of a place that adopt unwanted or over grown fish. He should be going sometime this week, Nice one. Tymm

Glad to help, whats the name of the place where hes going? Is it open to the public?

some people can't get larger than a 10 gallon tank be grateful. I am one of those people who get to get none of the fish they like because they outgrow their tank. :S

dont worry i wont lecture you...i have 2 irridescent sharks and was fooled by the petco description "only gets 8 inches". EVEN THEN....there is NO solid information on them online. Every place says they get a different size, so even research doesnt always help.
They are very jumpy yes yes...its wierd though, mine seem to recognize me. when my boyfriend or anyone walks by and checks out the tank they swim around all spiratically and usually bump into things, but when i come up to the tank they swim all slow back and forth across the front of the aquarium like they are looking at me  but anyways...
I plan on buying an undergravel heater when we upgrade to a 235 gal. later this year, because i have heard many stories of them breaking heaters. But back to your question...
If i had a fish that was too big, i would probably go around to all of the mom and pop fish stores inyour area. They almost always have a tank/s with larger fish in them that people have abandoned over the years etc.

how the hell do you catch a 15" fish -_-
