Hello all,

I have a Aquamanta EFX400 filter, it has 3 trays filled as below:

Bottom (Tray 1)
35ppi Sponge + bag of carbon

Middle (Tray 2)
Ceramic media (Not filled to the top)

Top (Tray 3)
15ppi Sponge, phosphate removal pad + filter floss.

Now I bought and extra 500g of ceramic media to replace the carbon when I was treating for meds. Now the meds have finished so I have put more carbon in to clear up the meds but have now used the extra ceramic media in the ceramic tray so its now full to the top.

So I now have an extra 500g of ceramic rings from what was in from the start, will the cause any problems? Will it have any benifit? What would you change?

Many Thanks!

over filling your media trays than what is recommened can greatly reduce flow and cause mechanical problems.

With the exception of sponge media you would do well to leave a bit of room in each crate (basket).
your ceramics need to bounce around a bit, If they are stocked so tight the are never to move it COULD be ok but the agitation is expected so I wouldn't restrict it much.
A flow restriction beyond normal aging of the filter is going to cause stress on the impeller causing premature failure of the unit.
This is also true of restricting via inline valves , poor choice to control flow via any means but deflection.
addition of extra uncompensated media may cause similar results.
