Okay, I was talking to Steve from Angelsplus over the phone the other day and he really enlightened me. Here are a couple things I learned.

Almost all fish keepers overfeed.
Yes, I am serious. I have recently found out that I have been overfeeding. I was definately not aware. When you feed your fish, you should feed them only a little bit. Not the 3-5 deal your fish food can has been telling you. When you feed your fish, they should STILL be hungry when your done, albiet not AS hungry. When you feed them the next time, they should feed voraciously.

Your filter is not there to pick up leftover food.
When your filter picks up leftover food, the food is still in the tank. It's just in a filter. So, imagine not having a filter and still feeding the way you do. Would you be worried about the appeareance of the tank? Would you be afraid of a couple stray flakes resting on the bottom? If so, your over feeding. When the food goes in your filter, it just breaks down. Which is a personal invitation to all bad bacteria. Why may lead to help problems in your fish, like internal and external bacterial infections. Do you clean your filter often? If and when you do, is there a lot of gunk in it? Black slime ect.? If so, you are overfeeding. That slime is the remnants of the food you've been feeding them. That is not to say it shouldn't be a little dirty, but there are not enough impurities in your water to gunk up the filter.

Growth affect on fry.
Overfeeding has a huge growth effect on fry. You would think, that giving them more than enough would cause them to grow faster, right? WRONG. Feed sparingly, like mentioned earlier. If a fish eats a mass amount of food at once, it doesn't absorb all the nutrients. It's intestinal tract only allows the fish to absorb so much at one time. The other food just passes through, undigested (causing you those nasty water problems). After overfeeding, it will be full and not be ready to eat later, or at least it wont eat as much as it would normally. Feeding sparingly and often gives you the opportunity to power feed you fish more nutrients in one day.

Okay, I just figured this might help some of you guys out there. I am constantly more aware of feeding than I was before. I am aiming to give my fish the best growth rates as possible, as well as keeping them healthy.

That's really interesting. I didn't know that.
I'll definately be more aware of how much I feed my fish now.

I find this pretty hard to do because most of my foods are messy like frozing, pellets, etc. But I'll try to cut back some cause I know I over feed!

yeah i ususally overfeed my fish so their mouths will be full while there will be enough for the catfish, however i just remembered their nocturnal so i guess ill be feeding at 2 different intervals to lower the amount of food i put in the tank

Well I'm glad to say I don't over feed... however getting it through to my dad how much they should be fed is extremely hard.

Since I've been home from Uni I've been feeding them. And the other day he walked past the tank and goes 'Oh the rams just came to the front, have you fed them?' I say that I have, and that they've had plenty for today.
He completely ignores me and feeds them. I wake up in the morning to a huge ammonia spike and lots of very ill looking fish. Fantastic.

By your standards I probably overfeed my fish slightly Krib. They always look hungry but I figure that is just their nature and I do make sure to feed enough but no more. I must not be overfeeding very much because I do not run high flow filters in most of my tanks and I do not get an accumulation on the substrate. If I miss a day of feeding, the fish can't just eat what I have been overfeeding so they act very hungry when food hits the water again. They don't just eat, they go nuts trying to get some food in that situation.

I am really guilty for over feeding :( Paid/paying the consequences now got a feeling that over feeding is where all my current problems stem from. Good article though :good:

Haha; just wanted to add, in the 55-gallon tank we've been over-feeding.... :( We aren't quite sure how much to feed yet, and my Mom just dumps food in there (holds the can and tips it over some; I actually pinch a few flakes or something in between my fingers, and, yeah).... We cleaned it out yesterday; it was so cloudy, and the stench was.... *SPINE-CURLING*. o_O; Spine curling stench.... DDX

There are days when I clearly dump too many flakes in and I think oh no. I try not to but it happens from time to time. I notice since I planted my tanks I get a heck of A lot more filter gunk. But when I had fake plants my filter did not get nearly as gross.

So the filter gunk depends on if you have plants too not just over feeding IMO.

I only feed once a day, but I have read I should be feeding my clown loaches more often and less each time. I may well be over compensating in the evenings :/
