right im looking into an external for my rio 240 and malawis for the same money i can have the fluval fx5 or the tetratec ex1200, now besides the obvious differences eg flow rate and media capacity which is a better filter in terms of maintenance and reliabilty, also would the flow on the fx5 be too much? i am looking to upgrade to a rio 400 in the future so would end up buying another ex1200 if i did choose the tetra tec which isnt bad as if one was to go down i would at least still have something running where as i could manage with just the fx5 on the 400 but if that went down i would be stuffed

suggestions and comments welcomed and anyones personal experiances with either filter would be great

for the same money i can have the fluval fx5 or the tetratec ex1200,

If you can get a FX5 for the same price as a EX1200 then you would be silly not to get one,

EX1200 sell for about £80 whereas the RRP is £115
FX5 sells for about £150 whereas the RRP is nearer £300

The Tetretec is a great filter but simply can't be compared to a FX5 which is better in every way (apart from electrical cost to run)

well when i say the same money i mean 15 quid difference which to me considering te difference in flow rate etc is near enough the same lol

so it wont be overkill then, and is there any known problems with the fx5 or have all the 05 problems been sorted on them???

I currently have a FX5 and can't fault it tbh,

In a 240L yes there will be a lot of flow, but with the rock setup that will be required for malawis, the high current will be invaluable for keeping the tank free form debri

I have also previously ran a EX1200 on a Rio 240 which housed messy catfish and cichlids and found it just about coped,

cheers for the info..... sounds like the fx5 is the one then for me i was just a little worried about it being too much,
