I have recently bought a pair of large Oscars which I was told that they were infact a mating pair. Ive had them about a week now, one of the oscars is acting slightly strange to me compared to how they were to begin with.

Over the last 24 hours the smaller one as been going to a certain part of the tank and sort of resting on my substrate and now and again leaning slightly, the other Oscar will come down and sort of face the smaller one and be next to them face to face kind of.

But when I get near the tank to observe closely whats going on to see if they are OK they swim off.

They are feeding alright, the biggest one takes lance fish out of my hand were as the smaller comes up but wont quite take it out of my hand but when i release it will happily eat it.

Is this normal behavour for them.

how long have you had the actual tank set up?
is this the only fish in the tank?
how big is the tank?
filtration? n what?
heat temp?
water stats?
where did you by em?wasnt in boscombe was it?

tanks been running for 2 weeks
theres a couple of parrots, a few plecs they dont bother each other
temps 24
got them from a big garden centre in derbyshire

how does some of these questions gonna tell me about how these oscars are acting, are these things normal, any chance they could be preparing to lay eggs or are they just resting?

we need all of the stats, you only answerd a few. what size tank, what are the stats nitrIte nitrAte and ammonia.
also a breeding pair of oscars i think will kill your parrots. and possibly the plecs.

the tank holds 450 litres, and the parrots came from the same tank as the oscars. i dont know any of the others sorry, but what could all the possibilities be.

ok i take it you havent cycled your tank? as only 2 weeks of cyling is not enough also you need test kits to make sure youve cycled. your fish are probably in a high ammonia and high nitrate and high nitrite enviroment. this will lead to further death. please return all of the fish. and do a fishless cycle. click this link for a guide to Fishless Cycling

Further Death? None have died, in fact they are still swimming around and seem fine and are eating food from my hand fine aswell, i just wondered why they were resting at the bottom like that now and again.

I actually took a sample of water to an aquatics centre last week and he said my water is fine.

well further illness. also, they seem fine, but there probably no inside. the ammonia is killing hem inside. they are probably on the bottom from an internal dieseas. please retun all he fish. and do a fishless cycle. then get your fish back.

Oscars moap when they are transfered to a new tank. Often playing dead, when I first saw my little 2 inch snow Oscar sink to the bottom of my tank I was freaking out. I went to get him out w/ a net and just like yours he swam off like nothing was wrong. He was hiding a lot during this period aswell. I'd often catch him peeking at me from behind driftwood or rocks making sure I wasn't going to eat him.

Did some online research, and found it is kinda common for them to moap or play dead. Within 1 week, maybe 2 my Oscar was the life of the tank. You should be okay. :good:

I believe they quickly learn to associate you with bringing the food, and not thinking you will eat them. Soon they will be at the front of the glass like puppies.

EDIT:

I've cycled tanks in as short as 1 day. ALL depends on how you're doing it, and the quality of the water in your livinh area. The one day thing was in my other post. Well established filter/dechlorinator. For an unestablished filter I've done it in as short as 1 week, maybe week and a half.

how did u cycle a tank in a day with pure ammonia then? it wont go in a day. so.. i dont know.

How did I do it? LOL. I just put everything in the tank, and plugged up the filter. But don't get me wrong, I am by far not the right person to be talking to about water treatment, I've had my share of bad events.

I was just sayin I've done it before. I know everything you guys are stating could be problems as well.

You're talking about setting up the tank, cycling is how the nitrogen cycle is set up in your tank. Go and read the pinned posts on cycling then understand what it really is. If all has gone well for you so far, then OK, you've either only started with hardy fish, (which is one method of cycling the tank) or you've been lucky.

Back to the original post -

Oscars are relatively intelligent as far as fish go, also they have quite distinct personalities. They could simply be sulking after being moved from their previous home. But without the benefit of a water test results we may never know. Take some water to your LFS and ask them to test it. That will tell you in the short term what the tank is doing. Even better, get your own test kit then you can test as often as necessary.

Lets think about this for a quick second, as I really hate to hijack a post. But if I put the fish in tap water they die. If I put the fish in water and it lives, it must be cycled. :hyper:

Whats the odds that a 55gal filter w/ WELL established bacteria and whatnot cycled a 10 gal tank w/ just some declrohinator and iron enrichment for the life plants? Well, I say its good, cause I just did it.

Anyhow, to once again return the post to where it needs to be.... The original poster said that he had the water tested and all is well... So, c'mon mates, bring it
together :good:

& by the way, you're cycling the tank, cause fish don't live in the filter  (just kidding, trying to be difficult now)

I would buy a test kit, and even if u did put all that stuff in, it takes sometime for the bacteria to get back to full count.
