I have been experimenting with foods for the oscars.

I had a few neons in the tank before i put them in, was not planning on feeding them live fish, but it seems i left 2 in there. The Oscars were very grateful....

Still, nevermind, mistake made, lesson learned. (I like my neons)

I had heart beef heart was a good meal, i dont have any, but i have bacon :D

Insects, i have dropped a few pond skimmers in there, they seem to have been eaten

Some tadpoles were munched on too.

Flake food gets annihilated!!

Im trying to find easy regular souces of food, should i use a weekly pattern to rotate foods?

Cheers peeps!

hey whats up. its always good to see another fellow oscar lover. i have never heard of feeding an oscar bacon i dont know how they would digest it. her is how i feed my three oscars if this helps. i give them once daily omega one cichlid formula pellets. available at most local petstores, tuesdays and thursdays i give them two frozen cubes of krill made by hakari. and once every 2 weeks on friday i give them 30 live feeders (tuffys) i think they are called. you dont have to give them the live feeders if you dont want to but i bought these pedatory fish for a reason to watch them grooooooow and eat live food. my storngest recommendation is that if oyu do give them the live feeders make sure that you do not leave them in overnight take out any uneaten ones or remains of ones to avoid any unwanted bacteria or filter clogging. also i always dump the feeders into a net and rinse them thouroughly with cold water not only does this remove anything they might have but i have found that it gets them to be more active in the tank when you drop them in. i hope this helps. what kind do you have? i have two albinos sunny and cher and one redtiger forgot his name :D :D

3 red tigers :D

Cheers, will get the routine underway asap :)

I think livefeeders everyonce in a while is a good thing.

I have some livebearers breeding out of control atm, sure i can get them providing regular food :p

No don't feed your oscar bacon. Oscars can not process fat like we can. This is why you have to stick to very lean meats such as beef/turkey heart. Feeders are not a great idea either unless you know where they come from and that they are disease free and even then they should only be used as treats and in extreme moderation. Feeders have little if no nutritional value. Here are some good food for oscars ...

Any cichlid pellets as a staple food. They should get this everyday and this should be the main diet source.

Any insects. They are insectavorious by nature plus they are loaded with good stuff. Nutrition packed!!

Any lean meat such as beef heart. Only given as a treat cause it will mess the tank up something bad!

Worms grubs etc. Again nutrution packed!

I am a little curious as to how big you guys tanks are. :)
big enough atm, its a 23.4 UK gallon. I know they will outgrow this, and i have plans for a larger tank to house them.

(100+gallons) I expect i will get rid of one maybe two as they grow too.
