I want one oscar. Just one.
I have 60 gallon, XP1 canister filtering. 2 adult convicts, 5 9month old babies...I want this one baby 1" oscar i fell in love with. Is this too much for my tank? Could an oscar learn not to eat convicts who are too big for his mouth? Should I switch species instead and just house one oscar and is this tank okay for one if he was alone with a small cleanup crew of snails and a couple raph cats?

Or am I just dreaming?

Why I'm asking cos there is this gorgeous baby oscar i saw, about 1", albino but pearly whitish, really pretty fish. I didn't get him cos I know to research first!

no, i wouldn't recommend it. i would only suggest a 75 gallon or higher for one oscar. There would most likely be plenty of problems with convicts involved.

You can safley fit 1 adult size oscar in a 55g tank. The convict's will kill the oscar, baby or adult. The truth is, most oscars are softies!!!!!!!!! I wouldnt do it. Would you rather have the oscar you like get put to a good home, or destoyed from convict's? Convicts are dead aggressive.

Yeh, it would not work with the cons and oscar in such a small tank, plus they're breeding and they are renowed for there aggressivness when defending their laying site, so they would probably shread the oscar.

The oscar would be alright in that tank for a few years, but it would eventually need atleast a 75gal imo, especially if kept with raphaels because they are just as messy.

Okay! I won't do the oscar. My crazy convicts are aggressive, fun to watch too. I do wanna get some cleanup crew fishies like Raph cats, I think they can do fine.

that's good. they have a whole 60 gallon tank to themselves.
sounds like mating season lol. :D

yeah totally. They've been in the tank about a week, already they're scouted territories and have settled in well-they all chase, display and all that. crazy fish!

I'm gonna post some pics in a bit :D

thats not true at allll!!!! a full grown oscar can obtain a length of 16". it is more common to see them reach about 12" in the hobby. if you didnt know, a 55g foot print has a 12" width. that gives the fish almost no room to turn around. a 75g is the bare minimum for 1 oscar, a 120 for a pair and so on...

wow all of you are wrong yes convicts could fight the oscar but an oscar is tuff so he will be fine.the minnium tank size for one oscar is a 30 gallon.

An Oscar maybe "tuff", but the fast, nippy, highly aggressive pair of convicts could kill an Oscar in such a confined space.

How could a 16" Oscar turn in a 30g? Which are on normally only 12" wide? Even a small Oscar could only live in a 30g for a short time due to their fast growth and huge bio load.

Seriously you're going to use that link as your evidence for me being wrong?

From that link:

"A general rule of thumb is 30 gallons per Oscar." Wouldn't that mean I could have, say, 6 in a 180g tank, that's fine. Though you seem to think that it means a 30g is fine for one, that's not what it says now is it?

Now what does it say after that? "Oscars, when they are fry, will be alright in 10 and 20 gallon aquariums only for a few weeks." If fry can only leave in a 20g for a few weeks, you think a full grown one can live in a 30g?

To be honest the information in that link is 'iffy', it needs to be more specific on the tank size information and also classes Oscars as "very aggressive" which they often are not, compared with most other cichlids that is.

Uhm.....naaa, id totally agree with JayJay here, no way id even consider a big soft Oscar in with the Killer Convicts. Also 30 Gall for an Oscar..you surely are having a laugh?
