I recently completed construction on an (approx) 6’ x 6’ x 2.75’ 550 US Gal indoor pond.

The liner was added and it was filled… and it had a very minor leak… but any leak is a major concern…

I took a week off… located the leak… adjusted the liner so the leak was in the excess liner and cut off… It has about 200-250 Gal in it now… I still need to adjust the liner some more to smooth out the floor and walls… then will fill it to max capacity (600 Gal) and let it sit for a week… it will be full by this evening… if it proves to have no leaks… I will continue…

First thing I will do is lower the water level to 4-6 inches... This will give between 65-100 Gallons… Next I will add heaters and filters… then add substrate (sand) and décor (driftwood, wood I acquired from a local stream, clay pots and a couple rocks)…

I want to cycle it at this lowered level to speed up the cycle. After it is cycled I will add 50 Gal every 3 or 4 days until it is full. I will consider it ‘still cycling’ until it is at it’s full mark (550 Gal). At this point I will probably let it sit with cycling fish in it for another week or two to ensure it’s stabilized.

If anyone has any experience cycling bodies of water this size I would love to hear your input. I have several established tanks now so about a dozen stockings of ‘old gravel’ will be added, rocks from established tanks, etc… Should I add the ‘old’ water from my established tanks to the pond when I do water changes on the est tanks?

I’m choosing to cycle the pond with fish for the primary reason, I’ve always done it this way. As to what fish I will cycle in it, I’ve yet to decide. I am going Friday to talk to the manager at a trustworthy LFS to see about bulk discounts on different options. After the cycle his complete I will happily keep any fish well treated until… well... Until the Oscars eat them…

Initial stocking will be a TON of guppies (probably 1,000) and possibly a ton of ghost shrimp (this will be added as soon as it reaches it‘s full mark). Then I will add 12 baby - juvenal Oscars. When they are big enough to mix with my existing Oscars I will add them (3 - 5-6 inchers) as well as 2 medium Pacus (they are 7 inches now and seem to grow just under an inch per month). I may add my pair of convicts as well…

It’s going to take some impressive self control… but I am committing to NOT overstock the pond. Once I see the Oscars grow to near full size and get a feel of it’s stocking limits, I may add some other larger cichlids (Green Terror, Jack Dempsey, and my girlfriend is dying to get a red tail cat, which I know will eventually need an even larger environment… but I saw this 1200 Gal kiddie pool for only $250! Anyway…). But that is all at least a year away so why think about it now…

*If you have experience with large tropical environments please give your critic. If you aren’t experienced but see something I overlooked or think of a way to improve my plan… again… please jump in. I’ve never done a fish project this big and have already screwed up several things, so if you can save me another screw up please do!

There are pics of this project and my other tanks in my signature, but you can just click here.

No experience or insight, but I think it sounds awesome :)

Well, some input - adding cycled water won't really do much and it would take a LOT of established gravel to help the cycle. What would be most beneficial is if you had some existing filter media to help out.

I was thinking about this... when it comes time to cycle the pond... take every filter media off every filter I have on established tank (7 total) and put them in nylon stockings and use them as substrate seeds. Actually it would be 6 as I'm going to transfer an established filter onto the pond. Now also remember... I will have tons of square footage, 30.5 but only 70-100 Gallons of water.

By the way... I've added more recent pics to the link in my sig or here.

Oh my god! So many people have said they were going to do this but never do! Finaly someone did it! YES lol! Thats awesome man i cant wait ti see the finished product  Keep up the goood work

I've also heard to help your aquarium cycle faster, is to dangle a piece of bloody steak or other red meat on s tring for about 10 minutes every few days, because it puts the needed bacteria in the water. I've never tried it though.

well... latest 'update' is more of a 'downdate'...

Pin hole leak number two discovered....

So today on the way home from work I stopped by Home Depot and bought shower wall material (approx 1/10th of an inch thick, 4' x 8' sheets) and a TON of silicone. I recently learned a harsh lesson about allowing more than enough curing time for silicone... so this will be a slow step in the process. Tomorrow I will begin cutting the sheets to fit in place and if I'm lucky will get the first round of siliconing done by Sunday night. Each of the four walls will need the plastic to be glued in place as well as the floor… 2 days later I will begin sealing the seams in the corners… This will happen 2 phases… so if I’m totally on my toes (which I’m usually not) the work will be done by the end of next weekend then 7-10 days for curing (although silicone takes 24-48 hours to cure, that time frame is meant when working with 3/8 of an inch bead… my seams will have MUCH more than that on it…

I'm convinced that when the project is done it will all be worth it... but damn am I ready for a taste of the pay off... lol

Sorry to hear about the let-down. But, you are right. You aren't gonna get a little taste of the honey now until your done. Then after that you'll have the whole beehive. Just a little something to give you motiviation, but you don't need it, you already know how great it's gonna be, and that's what keeps you going. Am I right?

No, the fact that I’m a grand into a project that doesn't work keeps me motivated! Well that and sheer pigheadedness and the attitude that I can do anything if I just keep pushing...

I wish you guys could see the smile as I say that. When you tackle something on this large of a scale as your first project of such... it is going to be complicated...

I chose it's size because I have SOOOO many times thought... I just need a 55 Gal tank... then it's not enough... so I get a 75... then I'm mad I didnt get the 90 because it's taller and would allow for so much better decor... then I get that and... what! have you seen the 110s! I didn't know they made those... then when I finally save up enough for that... I find out about the 6 foot tanks they don't stock at the LFS but they can special order...

Okay that's an exaggeration of my reality, but... it's been close enough to have learned the lesson I illustrated. I know you do not 'need' to have a huge tank... but to do what I want to do (raise a dozen Oscars from Baby to Massive) I need a big water container... I knew if I made or bought a 200 Gal or even 300Gal... I would overstock it and wouldn't get out of it what I'm looking for...

I've learned that if I spell out my dreams... figure out what it would take to live my dreams... draw out a set of plans step by step how to achieve them... detail out the more difficult steps... be prepared for a few of the easy steps to become difficult... gather my resources... and then finally with everything I need march at my dreams with a bright smiling knowing they are mine to be had... LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL….

Sorry... It’s Friday and I accidentally broke my posting after the second beer rule… So I’m done til tomorrow :D Cheers!

Sorry i have no experience cycling that volume of water but i would say you should abide by the same rules as always.

I cant wait until its finished and credit to you for having the courage to build it and make sure to post lots more pictures.

MWM ... thanks for the link to the video. Now that was motivation to get my butt downstairs and get to work!

But what was up with the gasoline song in the background?
