I always used thawed, as fresh can be expensive. I have never cooked prawns of fish for fish. Chop to sizes the fish can handle.
And for the side discussion, after your post @Ichthys , I looked up stomach content studies and they eat detritus, snails, inverts, aquatic insects, amphibians and some other fish. They are not as fish predatory as I thought.
According to FishBase they also eat plants, but having kept not much else for a 20 year spell, I’m pretty sure those stomach contents were just a ‘side salad’. They’d sooner swallow the leaf than risk letting go of what they grabbed with it.
The little frozen ‘prawns’ we get from UK supermarkets are pre-cooked. They’re fine, but raw fish is better than cooked, I would have thought.
