I think oscars are really cool, and I have read a little about them. Could I keep one in an overfiltered 48" X 18" X 18" tank? I was going to build it myself. Also, how big a tank in dimensions would a pair need? I was going to build the tank myself. The final question: Would it need to be heated if the temperature stayed above 72 degrees?

Not sure about some of your querstions but ive heard Oscars don't get along well with eachother. I've also heard the minimum for one Oscar and no other fish is 55 US gallons.

The tank you want to build is too small for one oscar, let alone a pair. With your dimensions, its about 67USG nominal and about prob 60G or so with a normal water fill. You need atleast 90G at a minimum but I would say atleast 125G or more if you want other tank mates....

For more than one:

....if they are a pair, atleast 150G to 180G (and remember, the only way they are a def pair, is if they have mated before. Otherwise there is no guarantee that you won't find one oscar messed up in a corner one day). If you want a pair, buy 5 or 6 little oscars and you will be able to see after awhile a few of them hanging around eachother. Keep the two that look the closest and maybe they will grow into a pair one day, but don't be dissapointed if one day they fight and you have to get rid of one, cause it is a def possibility.

.....if they are not a pair...ie. two males, you will need a large tank, prob upwards of 250G top 300G for males and atleast 220G for females. They will need their own territory that is divided up by plants, rocks, wood, and/or other decorations. Anything smaller and you will have a constant brawl in your tank.

Would it need to be heated if the temperature stayed above 72 degrees?

If you create a fish room and keep the temp at about 76F to 78F degrees you wouldn't need a heater...otherwise, your gonna need one to keep the water around 78F.

Honestly too, it would prob be easier to just buy a tank and then build a stand and hood. If you make the tank, your not gonna be able to make a tank as good as the manufacturing line of a tank maker can.... plus it'll prob be more expensive to make your own due to the cost of acrylic or glass.

I think I would try a 48" X 16" X 16", it's about 55 gallons and it gives the fish room to swim. How big a tank would a pair need.

I have two babies in a 150g (UK) which is 6ft x 2ft x 2ft. The advised minimum tank size is generally 75g for one and 125g for two, but obviously the bigger the better.

Why do you all think 1 oscar cant live in a 4 x 18 ??

I have kept alot bigger cichlids in that sized tank with out ANY problems.

A 4 x 18 could house a pair EASILY aslong as they were a PAIR and not just two oscars stuck together.

Oscars on average get to around 12inches leaving ample room for turning and swimming. Provided that you have at least two externals running at 3 x the tank size ... for example 50gallon tank with filter turning over at least 150gallons an hour you wont have a problems with water quality.

Of course BIGGER is always better though :D

Please ignore the others Lol. You are fine :)

12" on average though Joel; adult males can get 16". Setup a trickle tower and sump and nice powerful pump.

Thank you! I was sure one stinking oscar didn't need 75 gallons at an absolute minimum! I'll probably have to hold off, since making a tank is extremely expensive, and my paycheck is zip, as I am 13.

The biggest Oscar I have ever seen may have just scraped just over 16inch with most being around 12inches. I have seen thousands of oscars in my time of working in fish shops so I think I am more than qualified to answer.

I would say I could count them on one hand those I have seen over 15inches.

And just to say most people who kept these fish had 4 - 6ft tanks with other large cichlids too !!

I can understand why you and others feel the need for massive tanks but I can say hand on heart they will be ok in a 4 x 18 , nothing smaller though.

Walmart has 55gal setups pretty cheap i think, youd just need to upgrade the filter. petco has the tank only for $109 i think. Winter is almost here so grab yourself a snow shovel and make some money!

Thanks. Some people here go overboard since they have lots of money to spend on large tanks.

thats not right AT ALL!

we jus like to house our fish properly and give them space to swim.

theres no way id keep 2 oscars in anything smaller than a 125 jus so they could swim about without having to constantly go round each other.

im sat next to a 4x18 tank so i can see from here it wouldnt be good.

oh and im far from rich. i jus work hard and only get fish when im ready for them.
