Oscar friends

probably 5 inches because theyre stunted. i doubt you can house 2 FULL grown pacus in that tank

they were at least double that, possibly bigger, and he had 2 in there. Had on half of the tank each........

LOL Ex-Amp, i agree with you there, 15 oscars and two plecos??? i have a 511g (10ftx3ftx2 1/2ft) tank and THAT wont even fit in mine.

One constant problem with oscars in small tanks, is the ammonia content of the water. I've heard of people overstocking cichlid tanks to reduce aggression, but actually only mbuna tanks, and not new world tanks. Even if someone has been keeping alot of oscars in a relatively small tank with no problems doesnt mean that problems wont arise in the near future. And if he has had those 5 inch oscars for 5 years then they are obviously stunted, they should be putting on about 2 inches a year in a healthy environment. I am sorry to say it, because I think people underestimate stocking capabilities, but your friend is most definitely overstocked. I mean, it's better to give away or sell half your fish than it is to lose them all to disease or suffication.

Hang on a second.....I never said that any of the fish are stunted, and you can't just asume that they are. Many of the Oscars are a foot long, doesn't sound like they're stunted to me, and he hasn't lost any fish either.

Don't fish get stunted by being in a tank that's too small for them, not by being over stocked in a large tank? (as long as there are adequete water changes and filtration?)

I'm not condoning that many fish in that tank by any means, and agree with you all as I'm sure maintenance would be huge, just sharing what I saw....

btw, appologies but not trying to hijack. Thought that it replied to to the original question on what you can keep with Oscars, although obviously this is an extreme to say the least!! :X

jump :D

Nope, think about it, fish outgrow there tanks.. Its a myth that fish will only grow to suit the size of the tank, somthing made up buy shop owners to make more cash and selling more fish.

if that tank is only 2 feet hish you couldnt even fit a full grown pacu in there because they can get 3 feet in height ive seen huge ones at the aquarium in baltimore, maryland. they also had a 2 3.5 foot red tail cats in it

So are you saying that fish don't get stunted after all then??
Hi.
No fish don,t get stunted as said before they out grow there tank,
In my oscar tank i have both oscars, large bogwood and plenty of rocks.
also slate as they like to lay eggs on it.Gravel @ bottom of tank which they move around.i have no plants in the tank now waste of time.
my male oscar is 33cm long and my female is 31cm long.
they started off in a small tank and are now in a 75 gal tank which is suitable, but could be bigger, and they do grow rappidly.
Personally i would not put anyother fish in with them as i said before they are bullies.more so when they are mating

could juvie oscars live with convicts?

yes they can Bean, but if you have a pair of cons watch out there bad mofos as i seen in Ex-amps tank before a breeding pair of cons will not back out to anything for there offsping.

Now about the oscars If the oscars are 1 foot thats even worse, The oscars are pigs and they are prob 3 = 4 inches thick. With all those in there will produce WAY TOO MUCH Fish by product not to mention the food left over......
