Fertile fish eggs will remain clear for a few days and then you can start to see the embryo developing inside. The embryo (baby fish) will be black and you can normally see the eyes first.
------------------
A lot of cichlids will eat their eggs during the first 3-6 attempts at breeding. This is more common with fish that have been artificially reared instead of being left with their parents. Baby fish that are reared by their parents learn fish behaviour as well as parental care. This means when they breed, they know how to look after their eggs and young.
Fish that are artificially reared (eggs taken from parents before they hatch) usually eat their eggs and young and it takes them a few goes to work out what to do.
If a pair of cichlids continue to eat their eggs and young after 6 batches, separate the pair and try them with different partners. Sometimes one partner will eat them and the other doesn't. Swapping partners can sometimes fix this.
The best way to get a breeding pair of cichlids is to grow up 10+ young together and let them pr off naturally when they mature. then you move the prs into their own tanks.
