Hey guys,

I am very new to all this, I don't even have a tank set up yet! Just preparing everything and doing some research. Was just wondering about ordering fish online. Has anyone done it, and is it ok? I'd be worried that the fish would be a bit distressed by it all, or is it actually totally safe for them? I'd also like some suggestions for the fish I should have in my first tank. I'd preferably like easy to look after, gentle and peaceful fish.

Thanks.

I personally have not ordered fish online; I have ordered live plants and snails though. The way I see it, ordering fish online is absolutely fine. Fish stores order their fish too and get theirs shipped and transported to them all the time, so why not for the private collector. The only reason I haven't sone it myself is because my LFSs have a great selection of what I like anyway and that way I can pick out my fish in person, plus shipping costs for ordering live fish is pretty expensive.

If you can, get them from a GOOD local shop. You'll save money.

Shippng costs are generally about $40-50 for online orders so it's really only economical for harder to find specimens.

it's safe for the fish providing they come from a reputable source.

they have to be bagged up and shipped to get to the lfs anyway so it's not really any different. the price is really going to depend on where you are and what fish stores are near you, if you've gotta drive 2 hrs to find the nearest decent store then online ordering is a god send, however if the lfs is just down the rd then it#s gonna be cheaper to just go there.

what size tank are you going to get, what fish are suitable will be different

my friend got her fish online for her saltwater tank and it was $35 for shipping for as many fish as you want, they have a 14 day arrive alive and stay alive guarantee. go here and check it out! www.liveaquaria.com. i love this website and i order supplies from them all the time! very trustworthy
