Orbs - Do's And Donts

You mean Biorbs? The general recommendation is to avoid them, because they have poor filtration, poor surface area, and poor volume. Rectangle shaped tanks are generally better for fish. :)

yeah - Bi-Orb !

Ive had it 2yrs - first time tank !

Can I improve filtration - plants, media etc

or am I wasting my time !

I would just buy a rectangular tank, they are cheaper, easier to filter and illuminate, and are better for the fish.

The only thing you could do is add a small internal filter, and increase surface agitation. Even then, it's still better getting a rectangular tank. More surface area means more fish.

If you're keeping a Biorb I'd recommend you keep the stocking levels light to help keep everything healthy.

I've been able to add plants by using mosses, java fern etc that can be attached to bogwood and removed if necessary when the tank needs cleaning.

My betta girls are much more content since I moved them from the bigger rectangle tank into my 30l Biorb. I suppose it depends on the fish. I have java ferns on bogwood and hidey holes in mine. The inbuilt filtration agitates the surface more than enough, but then I guess they're anabantoids and don't take their oxygen from the water. I like Biorbs, but I'd be careful what livestock I put in them.

Ive got a 60L BiOrb and havent got a bad word to say about it. Stunnin' Tanks! And all is Dandy! I have learnt to accept the fact that there is a lot of people who just dont like them for some reason to another. Dont knock it untill you've tried it guys.

Hmmm..I have had 4 of these biorbs and I have to say I love each of them!

As long as you keep up with maintenance, watch what you actually put in the tanks, totally ignore the 'literature' that comes with them for it speaks rubbish, and don't overstock or fill them with goldfish, they do what they're meant to perfectly well. :D

ive got a biOrb, and there good for small fish and non messy fish. i love it because its different to most other tanks and if you look after it the fish stay healthy. but the stocking is a bit limited so i went and got a big 180l

i have a 30L biorb with some neons and a platty who has just given birth in there :)

once it's matured and you have the biological filtration going they are good little tanks providing you stock them right :good:

+1 on this comment. I bought a 30 litre for my very first tank but upgraded it through reef one to the 60 litre and I got it much cheaper as I had all the stuff I needed bar the bowl. I have 2 very happy colomesus puffers, 3 female and 2 male cherry barbs and a corydora juli. If you keep it simple and have a strict maintance regime then they can be quite rewarding. I do a 50% weekly water change and change the canister and air stone once every 4 weeks and never had a problem
