Hi all,

My Oranda is either full of eggs or suffering from dropsy, I have been away & left a family member in charge of feeding, this has been done no more than normal so shouldnt have a problem there.

Had the fish/tank for 7 months now, no problems at all. I tested the water when I got back with API droptests, all were where they should be in the readings?

My oranda seems to have got a big belly all of a sudden when I was away, doesnt seem lazy or lethargic, seems as he/she was before I went away, obviously at this stage I am pretty concerned but want to elimate any potential drama's I may have.

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers :good:

can you get a pic please?

is it evenly swollen...no sticking out scales or poppy eyes?

maybe got fed more than was intended...could be constipated..noticed how it looks when it poos..short and brown or long and stringy?

cooked squashed peas can help digestive problems..try feeding that for 3 days and see if it helps.

Hi, eyes seem ok really compared to the other, scales do look a bit like they are sticking out when I look at the pic closely. To be honest I havent noticed it poo yet since I got back so could be that?

I will try attach a pic now to see what you think?

Thanks again for your help :)

Ok tried to upload a pic but it was too large, if you copy this link in it should take you to a pic, if not please let me know :)

Looks like relatively mild dropsy to me/ Water stats? I love red caps like this, hope he gets better.

Oh dear :( I had a look at my fatty orandas and although round like yours, their scales are flat. I hope its not dropsy! I'd love a redcap.

What are your water params and tank size etc?

yep its dropsy and usually incurable... the scales standing is the end stage and usually game over.

you can try and save it by using epsom salts and warmer water.

in a ten gallon tank place heater set to 24c and a filter...add a quarter of a teaspoon of epsom salt per gallon..so for 10 gallons its 2 1/2 level teaspoons and hope for the best really

the epsom salt will naturally draw water away from the damaged kidneys and the heat gives a metabolic raise to help immune system work.

if youre in the USA then feed metromed..if in UK then theres nothing that will work...food has to have antibiotics in it to be even remotely effective, and the liquid thats sold for dropsy isnt strong enough to do anything.

Tank is 65ltr & the readings are all spot on, Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 0, PH 7.0 so I have absolutely no idea why it's happened, prob just one of those things sadly. Seems ok tho, swims around, come up to the top when I open the lid, doesnt sit on the bottom etc

I don't have a spare tank to put it in on it's own, I suppose I could ask the pet shop.

Are we saying that the general outcome will be the fish wont make it, if its an unpleasant illness/disease I'd rather put it out of it's misery.

Thanks guys n gals

Oh and thanks for resizing my pic for me fingers :)

Edited link was disallowed. I'll pm you a link I found to an excellent site.

BTW how many fish have you got in the 65L tank? What's the filtration? Are you aware that fancy goldies need 20 gallons for the first fish and a further 10 for each other? I have 3 fish (oranda, black moor and ranchu) in a 180L tank and although they seem lost at the moment, it won't be long before they grow into the tank :)

its a bacterial condition and the other fish may get it if they manage to eat the infected fish which is highly unlikely

if it was mine then i would put it out its misery if i couldnt seperate it.

I've had orandas for a while now, and luckily none of them have had dropsy.
dropsy is not incurable and I've had a few friends, whos orandas have had it.
there is a product called metro med, specially designed to help fish with dopsy and hexamita.
my friends used it for 2 weeks and their orandas recovered after a few days, returning to their normal selves.
hope this helped.

depends which country youre from..uk has no meds that are effective for treating internal problems
