In the tropical community tanks, as in my signature, I used to keep 78 deg F.
Than my lfs guru told me to raise that to 80-82 deg, it was better for the fish.
Than somebody respectful on this forum advised me to lower the temperature to 78, because I am cooking the fish.
Go figure.
What is your temperature and WHY? :dunno:
When we figure out why, maybe the optimum temperature will become apparent.

it really depends on the fish. for example, most livebearers prefer around 76-78 degrees F, whereas goldfish prefer 65-70 degrees F, angels can tolerater low seventies up to about 80 or 81. my advice, look up the various fish you have and see what the recommended temps are. most fish don't like anything over 80, its just too warm, except for some need it a little warmer to spawn, but again, that varies by fish. do a little research on your fish.
here are two good sites:

72 to 74, lower temps keep the fish's metabolism slower so they eat less and create less waste, also more disolved oxygen available at lower temperatures.

I like to keep my temps at around 76 to 78 degrees. That way, if my themometer is off by a degree or two, it is still within a safe range. :)
