....we've just picked up a Fluval Uno800 (80x30x40, 96Ltrs) from a friend. It came with nothing at all so we are in the process of choosing filters etc (any suggestions?!) but I was hoping for some advice on species we have got in mind. We are more than likely looking at using sand as the substrate, although will take any contradictory advice on board. Our ideal line up would be.......

6 Neon Tetras
4 Male Guppy's
2 Angel Fish (although i'm worried they'll eat the Neons)
4 Black Widow Tetras
1/2 Bristlenose Catfish
2 Siamese Fighting Fish
An unidentified crab/crabs!
1 Kuhli Loach
2 Dwarf Gourami
4 Giant Danio

Any suggestions on why this wouldn't work and potential replacements would be really appreciated. I'm sure you all get sick of these same questions day after day but as someone else has posted elsewhere...rather ask loads of questions than see my fish not make it.

First post so.......Hi everyone! Be gentle. :good:

6 Neon Tetras<wouldnt add these until tank has matured for a time>
4 female Guppy's and 1 male
1 Kuhli Loach
4 Black Widow Tetras
4 corys for bottom crew

tanks to small for angels....
two fighters unless female is a no no....
fighters and gouramis is a no no together.....
those dwarf gouramis we found to be quite aggresive...

Well your tank is only about 25gallons so that is not really that large. I would not put angels in the tank with all those other fish. Your right with them possibly eating smaller fish, also angels like lots of room.

Also if you follow the rule of one inch of adult fish per gallon. You should only have 25inches of adult fish size in that tank.

I would be careful with adding crabs as they are often known to grab your fish and kill them possibly.

The bettas, you need at least 5 females in a group for them to get along. Also you never want to put 2 males together. And be sure not to combine bettas with guppies as they are known to not always get along.

I would put in the....
6 neons
4 male guppies (that's fine, especially if you don't want breeding. I personally have 4 male guppies in a tank with danios and no problems.)
4 Black Widow Tetra's
1 Bristlenose Pleco

Best of Luck!!! :good: :good:

Siamese fighting fish can't be placed with anything that has long fins.
Black Widows as well. They're nippers.

Kuhli loaches should be in 5+. The more you have the more active they are. You'll never see one and it'll waste away.

Bristlenoses go with just about anything.

Angelfish will be crammed in the sized tank you have. When full grown, they're also capable of eating guppies and neons.

He, he, he, I'll try to be gentle :p

Okey doke, you need to cycle your tank before you get any fish, see the pinned item in this forum.

Try to go with odd numbers with fish, for some reason it seems to work better.

So how's this:

7 Neon Tetra
5 MALE guppies (guppies are called "live bearers", if you get female it needs to be at least 3 females to every male and you'll end up with so many fry you'll think you've been invaded!)
3 or 5 Black widdow tetra
1 Bristle nose catfish (they're big waste producers and will add a lot to your bio-load, but they're very entertaining to watch!)
3 to 5 Kuhli Loaches (they're fairly nocturnal so you'll probably only see them in the mornings and evenings, but again they're really entertaining to watch)
1 Dwarf Gourami (you can only have one, more than one and they'll fight - to the death)

That would make you pretty stocked up! Don't forget the live plants, all fish love them :)

Your tank's not really big enough for Angels, but if you do decide to get one, only get one!
No Betta's (Siamese Fighting Fish) they cannot safely be kept in a community tank, they will fight with guppies and gouramis
No crabs, they tend to kill and eat the other fish in the tank!
I don't know anything about Giant Danio's, so do a search on them and see what you can find out.

At a minimum your tank needs to be 4 times the length of the fish by at least 2 times the height and width.

Invest in a good set of test kits to measure Amonia, Nitrite, Nitrate and PH.

Ask lots of questions and do lots of research before you buy anything!

Good luck, hope I've been of some help to you :)

If you REALLY want Neon Tetras, wait until the tank has cycled AND matured for a good 5-6 weeks. They're not very hardy fish.

Neons are about the only input my other half has had whilst i've made the decision for us that we want a tank. She loves how small, speedy and pretty they are. If they maybe aren't the best for a pair of newbies....what would you recommend as a possible replacement. Similar size, characteristics etc. Thanks

Cardinal tetras look almost exactly like neons and are tougher. Maybe you could check out some cardinals?
edited to add: the only visible difference between them is that neons' red stripe is half the length of their body, and in cardinals the stripe goes all the way to the tail. So cardinals are actually more colourful as well as more hardy.

Thanks for that. If t'other half complains, i'm using you as the reason!

Thanks to everyone who has replied so far, i've found this forum to be far and away the most helpful i've come accross.
Our 'list' is changing with virtually with each new post but we are all but settled on the following.
5 Cardinal Tetras
3 Kuhli Loaches
12 Pygmy Cory (i've read they need to be kept in groups of approx this size. Correct?)
1 Bristlenose Plec
3 Pearl Gourami (1 Male, 2 Female)
5 Guppies (Male only. Not experienced enough to deal with breeding)

Quantities are obviously up for evaluation. Is this a group that would get along? I have tried to follow the advice I have been given but would welcome fresh input. I have kindly been offered mature filter media by a member of this forum, with this in mind, what order would people recommend to add these fish? Thanks again

IME, guppies, tetras and gouramis might not be so hot together as my tetras (cardinals, supposedly less nippy than neons) nipped at the fins of my guppies and gouramis. This is just what happened to me, more experienced aquarists may have a better opinion.

While Cardinals are generally hardier than Neons, I still wouldn't add any until the tank has matured, they just don't suit a new tank very well. As an alternative, you can't go wrong with Harlequin Rasboras. Give them good quality flake food and occasional frozen food and they'll absolutely glow. They're fabulous. Get some now then add the Neons or (preferably) Cardinals later.

Right then....we'ew going with the following.....

5 Cardinal Tetra
12 Pygmy Cory
1 Bristlenose Catfish
3 Kuhli Loach
3 Pearl Gourami (1 male, 2 female)

What order should we be looking at adding these to the tank?

Many thanks

Don't know much about Corys and Catfish, but Cardinals in last, and acclimatise them as slowly as possible.
