I have always been of the opinion to NOT let any of my hardscape lean against the aquarium glass for fear that the pressure over time may cause a leak or rupture. Do any of you let driftwood lean against the glass, or how about a piece of slate leaning against the glass for your angelfish to lay their eggs, etc.? Has doing this ever caused anyone problems?

I have driftwood against the glass, not slate. I prefer to stack slate to create hides, actually never considered avoiding pressure on glass though. May depend upon size of tank and weight of the stone.

In my opinion, driftwood is perfectly safe against glass. And certain rock is ok as long as it isn't leaning or stacked against the glass. For example, don't lean a piece of slate on glass and don't stack up a lot of river rocks on the the glass, but you can lay the rocks BY the glass and it can touch the glass. Just so there is no pressure or strong force on the glass I say its fine.

I lean even big heavy rocks against the glass. It’s not a problem. Rocks aren’t as heavy underwater. :)

The biggest risk IMO is of fish getting trapped - especially during large water changes

Wood I have no issues putting against the glass. I don't like to put rocks against the glass because I feel eventually you will scratch the glass which I find looks pretty bad, and partially because a single slip when placing the rock can be the end of the glass.

I prefer not to lean anything against the glass but sometimes it is better than the alternatives. Just make sure algae doesn’t grow there or it will be a pain to clean.
