Open soapbox

I'm sure we moved house cos I ran out of room to put more plants in the garden in St A's :D

Now I've a whole new garden to play with :)

Ok its time for me to add my opinion to this debate!!

For starters colour dyed fish!!!, what a cruel sadistic practice!
I would hope that if people knew exactly how the dye is applied that they will no longer buy these fish!!
1st the unfortunate fish is dipped in ACID!!!!! to strip its protective coating, this is the poor defenceless fishes only defence against bacteria, disease etc entering the skin!!!

2nd the fish is then plunged into concentrated dye of the chosen colour!!!!!

3rd the fish is placed in a fixing solution to "fix" the colour!

The mortality rate of this practise is approx 98% with the poor survivors left weak dissorientated and stressed which means that as well as having no protective mucus coating to defend against diseases etc they are even more suseptable to it by being stressed!!!!!!

A further 90% die within the first 2 months of being dyed, normally in some inexperienced fish keepers aquarium due to the effects of being dyed.

This is a barbaric and callous practise that needs to be stamped out for ever!!!!!

Now onto Parrot Cichlids and such like.................

Again this is not IMHO a good idea as the internal organs of a Parrot Cichlid are deformed as well as the body!!!!!!

This makes it hard for the fish to live let alone swim!!!!!!!

Plus why buy one of these when the two fish they were crossed from are so naturally beautiful??????? (the Severum and Red Devil for those of you who didnt know)

My opinion is stick to proper fish and leave the mungrols in the shop tanks.......they'll soon get the message!!!

With so much variety out there i feel there is no need to make animals (of ANY kind) suffer by inbreeding or cross breeding just to please the human eye!!!!

These are just my opinions and i mean no offence to those who choose to keep these things!

I agree with the general opinion about Dyed fish and breeding of hybrids. Dyed fish don't get any support and i will stop going to any LFS who stocks them. As for hybrids a past time that leaves fish in a very bad state but what about the range of Livebearers that are available today. Nothing like there wild counter parts ie the wild guppy most Fishkeepers would not reconnise. Is this not part of the same problem. Or the baddly breeding of Neon tetra's where the strains available are so week they are not worth stocking but LFS still stock them for who. Newbies. I like this debate. :music:

I agree with your view on not using shops that stock dyed fish.

If enough of us stop using these shops they will get the message with any luck.

As for the Guppies Livebearers etc most of these are just colour morphs which are ok IMO as they are not crossed with a different species. ;)

Pete it has been known in the past for Different Livebearers to be cross bred but i do agree these are mainly Colour morphs and are ok. The prob with Livebearers is the poor breeding practices that allow for poor quality fish to be sold especialy from so called proffesional breeders.

I agree totally with you there mate and personaly when ever i breed fish i keep only the best specimens, the rest are grown on however but this is to provide live food for fish like my Knife fish and Oscars/Birchirs etc :0

I can see this post now starting to head down the lines of the old great feeder debate lol

Would that be of feeder Fish with plenty of Chips

Hey Everyone, I have been breeding Cichlids for over 10 years now, and while I agree that hybrids such as the Blood Parrot should not be created, I also felt compelled to buy one almost two years ago, the poor fish looked like it was about to die, the store I bought him from was using floating stick food that was too large for the Parrot to fit in his mouth. I bought him and put him in my 55 with some tinfoils and I am happy to say that he is alive and well and has a personality that rivals even my Frontosa.

Always remember, these genetic mutations are the creations of people who want to make a buck, it is not the fishes fault. I know some of you may say that by purchasing him I am contributing to this problem. To those people I can only say that I feel the remaining blood parrots/hybrids on the market should be given homes and enjoyed. they are not a strain that will last without human tampering so the fish that are there should not be rally'd against.

daredevil-you took the words right out of my mouth,

People actually dye fish that is soooooooooooooo sick.

Maybe the hybrid flowerhorn that can't be mixed but can breed are like black widow spiders where the male gets eaten if he's unlucky

Anyway, my local lfs refuses to stock hybrid so thats good.

Guess I'll put in my two cents.

There are enough fish in the hobby to satisfy everyones taste. More should not be created to satisfy the pocketbooks of the unscrupulous. You all forgot the poor goldfish that has bee morphed so much by the chinese, who knows what one is supposed to look like.

I do agree with the Devil in taking pity for these fish. But it brings up the catch 22 of increased demand being perceived by the breeders.

The poor painted fish. I never realized the mortality rate of the process. It shouldn't be allowed.

As for flowers, seeds from them generally will revert back to the original strain. So I am not overly concerned about a giant poison ivy taking over the world.

As far as dogs. I have a black lab. You stop him..

  Well..well...well...everyone seems to have had a go at this one! My own view is the same as G.L.'s.

The general flow of opinion is against such fish but I'm afraid as long as peeps buy them, some unscrupulous breeders will continue to create these mutants to make a fast buck. There are over 30,000 species of fish known to science, (not all suitable for aquarium life!), surely peeps can find a fish that pleases them!!!!!   :/  Mac.

P.S. A warm welcome to the forum Daredevil.
