well i bought a khuli loach today it was a speedy little thing. it wouldn't allow me to net him, he was being a pain in the fish store too, so me being the idiot i am tried to pour him into a net. well before i relized it he was heading down the drain. i am such an idiot i felt so bad, i unscrewed the pipes to try and fetch him but he was gone.
the fish store laughed as i told them and bought another loach. the second loach did not give me any problems went right into the net, i think word got around about me.

has anyone else had this happened to them. i feel so bad for the first little one. :(

Just out of interest why was you putting him into a net 1st day you got him? wouldnt you acclimatise them like normal fish when adding to your tank?
Ive emptied water down drain before out of the filter and noticed fry so no idea if i lost any as i quickly put plug in.

i did acclment him, i was trying to get him out of the bag, it was a bone headed idea to try and pour him out without the stopper down. i learned the hard way. it will not happen again though.

Best to have them in a pair or even more. They like sand so they can bury themselves in it but they are fine with pea gravel too. They like a well planted tank too as they hide around the base of the stems of plants. Great fish but once they are in the tank forget about catching them with nets-they are toooooo quick!

Pouring the acclimated fish through a net to introduce only the fish to your tank is a good idea. Don't get the idea that doing that was wrong. It keeps you from introducing whatever is in the fish store's water into your tank beyond what is on the fish itself. The stopper is a must if you are going to get clumsy about it though.

I agree!

Never add the store's water to your own tank. You have no idea what might come in.

I'd be too chicken to do that over a sink, stoppered or not - if I can't net the fish out of the bag easily, I pour over the dump bucket I use for water changes and no worries about fluke dives through the overflow hole, lol.
But I have several different sizes of nets, about 5 actually, with one very small, which makes things like that easier.

I also have heard that not only the khuli's but the owner's best off with at least several kuhlis, as they're happier and less shy in groups.
I haven't had any in years since (snivel) giving away my fish and tanks prior to moving out-of-town, and hope to get 4 or 5 down the road a bit, if I can get the same variety I had then.
They seem to be hard to get hold of these days, and I've been told they're too delicate now to bother keeping in stock, although this wasn't the case before...

It is good practice to keep the lfs water out of your tank water. This is especially important when you are dealing with reefs, because traces of copper will pretty much cause everything to melt.

Khulis like being in groups, and they like hiding. You will rarely see them unless they are the black strain. The only time i see mine is when they pop their head out when i feed.

Wait, so you were pouring the water out with the fish in it, while draining it but catching the loach? (Complicated? :D)

Yeah, I do that to but not at the sink

1HR, -30 Minutes Acclimatize, then i use a bucket, THEN i drain it. It'll have some water to swim but caught in the net
so i quickly get it in the tank.

>:) Boy, my dead shrimps/pablo my crayfish were a pain to get off the net. kept sticking on.

Everyone makes mistakes...don't beat yourself up! The main thing is to learn from them...

sorry about that sailor bet you feel like a right numpty lol
bet ya wont do that again
regards scot :good:
