I have13 Pristella tetras that often do laps across the tank in a loose and flowing shoal. Sometimes it's a row, sometimes a clump, with laggers darting up to the front. Either way, this is no doubt a schooling fish.

Fun to watch too.


There is this one, a smallish one that is healthy and active who often is alone. I am pretty sure it's the same one cause it's hanging out by one spot on the other side of the tank from where the rest of the school resides, which is a clump of plastic plants.

What's up with this one, did he/she get the scarlet letter and banished? I looked for eggs but didn't see any.

Some fish are just loners. That's all I can say. It's their choice to stay away from the others if they want to. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

We have 10 black phantom tetras in our 75 gallon and have one that is the same way. Sometimes he hangs out with the rest but most of the time he is off on his own. He is also slightly smaller than the others (these are very small tetras anyway - none over about an inch). My wife named him Lewis (after the explorer of Lewis and Clark fame). We already have a betta named Clark (after Clark W. Griswold III of National Lampoon's Vacation movies). My wife names all the fish. That is her job. I change the water, do all the test and clean the tanks. She names the fish. What's wrong with this picture.

I have a cory that does that, it sometimes hangs out with the others but most of the time its on the other side of the tank by itself. Perhaps it has deep thoughts.... or is planning some sort of escape

one of my 4 balas is kind of a loner. he usually chases the others away and i never understood why. Hes totally healthy though so maybe like taylor said, some fish are just loners

In my shoal of yo-yo loaches, the smallest is a loner. The rest are very visible and active, and he watches from a cave or from inside a log most of the time. Some fish are just like that (just as some people are like that). I don't think it's anything to worry about.

As I mentioned earlier, I have a loner in my school of black phantoms too but when the lid opens for feeding time, all 10 are immediately at the top of the tank in one tight little school ready to eat.
