Just for perspective, no longer, but a while back my daughter Abbey had a job at Petsmart and was assigned to Pet Care. Now I've been a fishkeeper for over 50 years and I was impressed by how much knowledge she obtained about fish as well as animals in general. It became second nature for her as like Elly May Clampett (Beverly Hillbillies reference) she was always 'in tune' with critters. (lots of funny stories about missing birds and hamsters!)

The point is that it's always a crap shoot as to the depth of knowledge any retail clerk has in the goods and services they are 'responsible' for. Now one might generally think that any employee in a Mom & Pop fish store might be more in the know...but then too, depending on the business, they might hire employees that may or may not be experts.

Btw @OliveFish05 I hope they don't let your brother out alone too often! Does he have his name sewn in his clothes? lol

I think it's normal not to care about your job, if it's a job you took out of desperation. You do enough to reflect what they pay you, and maybe look for something you'd like to do. I worked in a few places where I didn't even know what they sold or manufactured before I looked up enough info to wing it through the interview.
If I had gotten a fish store job, it would have been different, but my thankfully short career in home furnishings was a pretty good example of seeking employment first, and working in something that interested me second.
Once I had a trade it was different - then I went all out. But minimum wage jobs are tough.
Most chain stores don't offer a lot of incentive to learn. One local store used to keep copies of the Baensch Atlas books in the break room, and once every few weeks employees had the option of taking quizzes. Above a certain score was worth a dime an hour, with a possible maximum above minumum wages by a couple of dollars. That store had stable personel and you could talk fish with the people there. When a new fish came in, they looked it up right away.
