One day I went into a petsmart before I had any fish in my 20g... I asked them if they do special orders (I kinda knew they didnt but it never hurts to ask) and then asked if they have ever gotten peacock gudgeons in... They said last time they saw one in store was TEN YEARS AGO! Geeeeeez! But wait thats not the main part of the story... I asked some things to the person helping me to see what they knew about aquariums and such... Well luckily she was honest but what she said made me kinda want to laugh. She said: "I dont know anything about aquariums really, I just help bag up the fish. But if you want to know more on fish, maybe go to the Petsmart closest to the beach because they are close to the ocean so they probably know more." I stood there staring at her for like five seconds trying to decide if she was joking or not and then just went: "Ohhhh ok, Thank you." When I realized she wasnt joking... And then we said bye and checked out... It was just one of those funny but unfunny encounters

And that is a prime example of why you really shouldn't listen to the average shopworker.

They are there to only sell you stuff...most of which is unneccessary and alot of it is likely to kill your fish.

My brother and I went to Petco to pick up an online order once. They had some plant sale, so I asked for some bamboo. As the woman was bagging up my plants, my brother was asking me questions about tank sizes and stuff.

He goes “What’s the largest tank size you can buy, like anywhere”
So I said “I don’t know, hundreds of gallons”
He points at the acrylic modular cube aquarium petco sells plants in and goes “how many gallons is that”
I said “I don’t know, it’s not a standard size. It looks like it holds maybe 30 gallons”
“Ohhhh ok. Do they sell wall size aquariums here?”
“No, they only sell 4 foot tanks and under”
“Ah man. How many gallons is a 4 foot tank?”
“55 or 75…”
“How are they different gallons if they’re the same length”
“Because a 75 is wider”
“But is it so wide that it doubles the gallon capacity?”
“No, 75 is not double of 55”
“No but I mean it basically is”

Eventually that conversation fazed out, and he started talking about the fish in the tank.

He goes “is that fish dead?”
“Yes, it is. Don’t point it out, the employee can hear us”
“Yeah ok but why did they let the fish die?”
“They didn’t let the fish die, sometimes it just happens with the stress of shipping”
“Yeah but why do they ship them if it kills the fish”
“Ummm because they don’t have the setup to breed the fish in store”
“Well why not. It seems like they’re killing a lot of fish”
“Shhhhhhhh it’s fine”

Meanwhile the woman bagging my bamboo is cracking up behind us at his ridiculous questions. My brother is not 5. He is an adult!

Here's the thing. Most people these days just need a job. Any job and not all of us are fortunate enough to be able to be working where we want or at what we want. We take the first job that hires us because the kids are hungry and the landlord is pounding on the door. If you can see these pet store people aren't up to speed , have a heart and be a little helpful to them if they can't be helpful to you.

No, no filter required for goldfish in a bowl.

Yeah sure that Oscar will only grow to the size for that tank and it will be fine with neons

Change the filter media every month and give me all your money

As for conditioning in the water? You're supposed to use table salt. Wait... maybe it was sea salt? Same difference.

And yes, for sure change the filter media monthly, that's the only way to do it.
