ok i was at petco and these guys had 2 bettas ,a chiclid and 3 gold fish and you know what they were going to do ? fight the bettas and have the chiclid kill the 3 gold fish ...oh my mom wanted to SOCK them ..grr this #### makes me mad.

 That's horrible! Was it the employees that were doing it or some customers?

some customers ,the employe that checked out the fish tried to prevent them.

If I was the employee I would have refused to sell to them. If I remember my customer service days, a retailer has the right to refuse service. I have a problem with the 2 betta thing. I don't have a problem letting a cichlid eat feeder fish. I know some people will not agree with me, but they are born that way. It isn't fair to not give them live food.

It is wrong to let 2 bettas fight. I really hope you said something to them. I would have. I would have let them know how disgusted I was at their behaviour. Even if they didn't care, it would have made me feel better.

Let's see, if I started kicking around puppies there, do you think they would call the cops? Nah, if they let customers tear up fish without making a call, why would they call about the puppies?

Grrr! :< That's the only reason I don't want to work in a LFS... I'd love the job but it'd be so hard to sell people fish knowing that they'll be mistreated.

i have my own opinion on betta fighting. i think its totally natural and even fun to watch the 2 fish duel each other BUT its gotta be done right. bettas in the wild contrary to popular beleif, do not fight to the death, their duels consist of a few nips, tears, and body shots, but niether fish should die as the result of a duel, one will eventually retreat. most of these people who fight fish, fight them in a small tank to the death. the only reason the 2 fish would ever fight to the death is if they have no where to run. i beleive a short duel in a large tank between 2 conditioned fish is very healthy for them, death should never be the out come. the guys you witnessed at the petco are total idiots and diserve a fate much greater than death. i could never purposely kill something, the guilt would haunt me for years, i only hope these men were young and that they will grow up and develope some kind of humanity. "Only In America" how come i never hear about this #### from UK, or Canada?

Because they at least have a few laws protecting fish?

We here in America seem to only value life when it's that of an unborn fetus, and protect freedom so long it doesn't involve homosexuals having the freedom to marry

*Ahem* Sorry, I just had to get that off my chest. I'm in no way trying to say that all Americans are like that, but it is an increasing and disturbing trend.

Don't they breed bettas for that purpose? I don't think petstore VT's are suppost to fight, they are suppost to be pets. I know there are some sites that sell "specail" bettas that are breed to fight and only fight.
Oh, and because Canada's a good place :D I have never once witnessed somebody buying bettas to fight, which is a good thing. I think why this seems to be happening in the US more then, say, Canada is because there are more US people on this forum then Canadians (atleast I think there are) so more people from the US are going to post about that kinda of stuff....if I make any sense at all :S

what kind of cichlid was it? If it was like a ram, I would just laugh, as that wouldnt do anything to the goldfish.

Were these goldfish the feeder ones?

Also, I think it is fine to let the bettas flare at eachother and show off for about 2 mins, because they usually dont fight untill after the two mins of displaying ( though none of mine have even flared at eachother) but fighting is wrong. Though bettas like to fight, so that is why I let mine go in a 5 gallon bucket for the two mins, but if one tried to bite I would seperate them. But I only did that with the plakats. My VT's are to old to even bother with that as well, so I never put them through the stress, so they never flare either. So yeah, the fighting part is wrong as well

So hopefully the cichlid is a nice kind that will not hurt the goldfish, and the bettas are like mine, and dont care to fight at all.

Meg is right
pet store, or any, VT's arn't supposed to fight, they dont know how

i believe in Thailand, they train tough built plakats to fight. They condition them properly and fight them properly, why would they want to lose their fish?
i have nothing against fight bettas, as long as its done properly
