Yay my bettas spawned late last night!!! I was there to see!! At first she had about 10 eggs but sadly he ate them (why did he do that?) Then she went to go hide so I figured they were done but when I woke up his nest was full of eggs!! But I caught him eating some (should I take him out?) Mom still looks full of eggs so should I leave her in there? Do you think they arent doing as good because this is there first time?

First off...Congrads for your bettas and you. I dont know much about betta breeding but I've read that male bettas put the eggs in there mouth to clean it with this special chemical that they have in them. Then he lets them out. So the eggs you saw the next morning maybe the eggs he "ATE" the last night. But to be on the safe side I dont think you should have the female betta in there still. Because females dont know that the eggs are hers or even know what they are she's the one whos going to eat them...And you said you think that she has some eggs still in her i think you should take her out into a WARM tank not under 80Degrees F. or over 80...But just make sure its 80 so if the eggs are still in there they can hatch in a safe enviorment but make sure to take out the eggs right away! after the eggs are in the tank so the male can make a bubble nest. For the final question I think there doing great for the first time. Post up some pix...So we have a better idea on things.

But if she just has them on her own will they be fertile?

Huh? I dont know about that one...It doesnt really matter if she has them on her own just make sure to transport the eggs quickly so the male can add them in the bubble nest. Very important. If you dont they will sink to the bottom and then the female will eat them. but just to be safe get a second opinion. Maybe try reasearching under Betta Breeding... On google or something.

No, that's why you put the pair together and they embrace. This is when the female releases eggs and the male releases sperm, the two components meet and the egg becomes fertilized. Fertilization is external, so if you put the female in a tank by herself and she expels eggs they will not be fertilized. Chances are though, she will reabsorb them into her body instead of expelling them.
Here is a good article I found on google about embracing and what should happen when the female expels her eggs, etc.

Arrowhead, you would not need to transport the eggs from the female's tank to the male's. They are not fertile and will rot or may be eaten by the male. The father might tend to them but I doubt he would if you just threw some eggs into the tank. I would recommend you do a little research too before passing off advice, since it's my understanding you are pretty new to bettas.

That's why I told her to get a second opinion which happens to be you... So now shes set.

Sorry if I've read this wrong it's early for me... :p

If the female is still in the tank please take her out.

One they have done spawning the males instinct is to protact the eggs and would kill her as soon as look at her.

It is sometimes hard to tell if a male is eating the eggs. As said the male will clean them but he will also move them around in the nest too, check around with a torch to see if they are in a different place. If he is eating them, they may not have been fertile in the first place, and even if they were there's not much you can do about it.

If you do pull the male out, the eggs may not hatch anyway as the male would clean them to stop fungus and without him they would quickly succumb to it. Really the male is the best to take care of them.

Ok here is an update:

Mom is back in her own tank happily eating BS.
Dad has moved the eggs to a new nest he built across the tank.
And guess what?? They have hatched!! I saw about 3 fall from the nest and dad quickly put them back up!!
Hopefully there will only be a few babys as this is my first time breeding.
So when should the babys start swimming on thier own?

Ok babies are swimming somewhat but dad still insist on them in the nest. I got some liqifry is that ok for them?

Once the babies are swimming, it's best to take Papa out, or else he'll likely get frustrated enough trying to keep up that he may just start snacking on them.

I haven't used Liquifry, but some other people on here have and would be better qualified to give an opinion.

OOOO..Babehs...Your soooo lucky...I have a 10 gallon tank that I was gonna use for breeding...But I was 2 afraid that im gonna be clueless. But now im trying to ask people if they want to give their extra fry that they dont have room for to me so i can put them in my 10 gallon tank thats divided in 4 right now...

Uh...I dont really get the point of that last post :S
