Wow, so I have been worrying about my impulse buy: a pearl scale gold angel and a veil-tail koi angel. I was not really interested in more angels so I hoped this pair would work by some miracle. I was just about to write you guys to ask your sense of the sexes because I was seeing a hump on the forehead of the koi and a flatter forehead on gold. Then the gold was getting quite fat, although she is the most aggressive eater even matching the congo tetras. Anyway, they spawned on a big ole amazon sword leaf.... wait let me get a picture of that too. The gold is fanning the eggs and both are keeping others away. I think you can see the breeding tube in the last photo so I'm pretty certain I'm right the gold is the female. The congo tetras are really interested. I'm not sure what to expect from here. I'm not intending to protect the eggs or anything. Maybe some day. My fingers are really crossed so that aggression doesn't get out of hand. Thoughts on that? (She says nervously.)

Just wanted to share my excitement.

P.S. My Bolivian Rams in another tank spawned yesterday or today as well. I've been pretty lucky getting the pairs right from the start.

That's great news. Are you going to raise the fry?

It's so exciting when fish spawn. That Koi angle is a true beauty. Where did you find them?

It is exciting when they spawn. I guess it validates that I'm doing somethings right. I'm not planning to raise the fry this time around. I need to learn a bit more and of course I need a fry tank.... did you see that....NEED... Besides that these guys are young. The Koi is about 1.3 inches in the body and the gold about 1.6 inches. Definitely their first spawn. Given their behavior and the photos, I do have the sexes correct don't I...male koi and female gold?

This morning they seem to be taking turns fanning the eggs although the male/veiltail seems a bit awkward and inefficient. He swims away more. But he is playing defense too.

Angelfishguy, I'll give you some fry if I ever get to that point you don't have to steal. Give me some advice on all this angel fish aggression I hear about. My two are in a 60 gallon community tank with congo tetras, apistos and corys and a bn at the moment. Am I headed for trouble? Do the angels eventually need to be in their own tank. There was nothing unusual with my two during this breeding phase, no aggression toward each other or other tank mates, until now and they are chasing fish away from the eggs but nothing crazy that makes me think they are going to hurt anyone or each other.

Snowflake. I got them down in Carson at your favorite store! Saw your tank & stuff on craigslist. Good luck. Does that mean you found something? Or sell first then buy. I'm thinking about an order for fish will contact you before I do...if I do.

Yes I got a really nice 80gal it's where the 55 gal was. I just set it up today. Sorry no more fish for me can't even look at aquabid any more or craigslist. My tanks are full. That's why I pushed for this 80 gal was so I could keep all my fish with out selling them off. The blue acara female is up for sale but no rush to to sell her now. I really am done now and if any fish die I'm not going to get any more just going to be happy with what I have. I can't think of any other fish I would rather have.

Good luck with the fry maybe some will make it with out a fry tank. Let us know how they do.

So an update... Of the 100 or so eggs (I'm pretty bad at guestimating) approximately 10 turned bright white. Reading about this, they are either unfertilized or just going bad.

I read if they all go white by tomorrow (48 hours) it may mean they were never fertilized. Again, not planning to save these but just learn. Territorial aggression has definitely increased. Interesting how fast these fish can move when they mean business. The male, the koi, the one I believe to be male, is more actively tending the nest, fanning and guarding. The female has taken a keen interest in my nerite snail all of a sudden. I may move the snails tomorrow. The male apisto caratuoides is wondering why he can't get his female to spawn, he is sure trying everything to impress her. Feels like a soap opera. :fun:

P.S. Photos are the best I can do with a point and shoot camera.

50% of the eggs are white now... approximately 36-40 hours after spawning.

P.S. About the angel's sizes. Sizes quoted above are of the body only.

The end. Came home from work approximately 48 hours after spawning and the eggs are gone, a few white ones among the rocks.

Interesting though. Will be interesting to see how the angels behavior changes. They seem a bit more aggressive with other fish but now that they are not protecting eggs they aren't quite as committed to aggression.
