Lazy Betta, yeah that explains Oliver very well. We've moved three platys out of the tank - and left him with the three docile ones.
He really does nothing except sit in one spot, swim around occasionally, then sit in the spot.

I'm thinking plain lazy is a good description.
Will keep this thread updated for a bit longer - as he has fin rot (medicine is on the way) so I'm monitoring him closely.
Also, It's a good way to keep track of his happy progress

With fin rot, you really do not need medicine.  Nice warm and very clean water will heal that up pretty easily unless it gets really bad/infected.  How often are you doing water changes and at what percentage?

Uncycled tank. once every two days, 10%.

If he is showing signs of fin rot, I would up the water changes to at least 25% every two days on up to 50% depending on the rate of ammonia in the tank.  Are you testing your water?  If so, how often?  If the tank is uncycled, that might explain a little bit more about why Oliver is acting the way he is.  The fluxuating levels of ammonia and nitrIte are keeping him from being as awesome as he can be.  Just keep a real good eye on your levels to keep him from being sick.  ;)

Levels checked every day, all perfectly safe. :)
Will up the water changes then

What are the levels and what do you test with (strips or liquid)?  The only true safe level for ammonia and nitrIte is 0, anything else is dangerous.  (I am sure you know this already or it has been mentioned but I don't always have time to read back over everything so please excuse me if this has been discussed already.  :)  )

Liquid, API Test Kit. Nitrite and Ammonia are both 0 :)
Yeah - I've taken alot of time to read over what I need to be doing safety-wise.

Awesome!!!  Yep so my recommendation will stay the same.  25% every 2 days and you should start seeing some improvement in his fins without medication.  :D

Hope Oliver is doing ok now. I've got a young adult male platy in with Eragon now - wasn't planned but Buck (young platy) was causing probs in the main tank. They both seem to get on at the moment, but as said before it's down to the individual temperament of the fish involved. Eragon has actually come out of his shell since Buck was put in there! Oliver may be better with just 1 friend - maybe a group of platies with him was too much too soon.

He's swimming around now since the three platys were removed.
I'm hoping this isn't temporary.

He also doesnt seem bothered by the three remaining platys

29th April update:

Oliver is perfectly fine now!
He's swimming about, chasing platys, and coming over to say hello to me!

Thank you all for your help!

Glad Oliver's on the mend now. They are such friendly fish aren't they? Or is it just they know the hand that feeds them? lol

I love them- can't believe I never really liked them much until this forum and mts.
Tonight my little 2.5yr old came into my bedroom to see Vader "hi BADER (lol) what you doin?" Vader instantly flares to which my son pays no attention and disappears off to do something else, leaving Vader victoriously swimming around his tank!

I only wish I had room downstairs for him, where I could see him more often :(

I am very happy to hear that Oliver is now settled in his bigger tank and is feeling better!
