I just redid my tank today! Don't worry I'm definately not done yet! I want to fill the thing up with plants and get some java moss growing too...I just have to find it :) my LFS Doesn't carry it :p So The first pic is what it looked like before I changed it this morning and the next pictures are of what it looks like as of today and some baby fry that I have in there as well :)

Please let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions whatsoever! :) I'm open to any criticism! :)

Thanks,
Megan :)

.

Oh yea and I bought a new and better filter...I originally had the Top fin one that came with the tank...But I wasn't getting enough waterflow and I had a lot of algae blooms...so I bought this penguin bio wheel one :)

Hi, I'm not too sure, so I'd wait till someone else comes along, but I think that fern is usually labelled as "umbrella fern" in most LFS.
It is not a true aquatic plant and will start rotting quickly and pollute your tank. I'd advise you to take it out asap.
The plant in the front of the wood is a type of anubias (i think). Keep the rhizhome ( the thick "root" your leaves are attached to) above the substrate or it will also die.

Otherwise, huge improvement imo. Welcome to the planted side :p

Thanks! It's a peacock fern...I thought it was aquatic? oh geez...thats just great...should I take it back to Petsmart? And yea the other one is a type of anubia...(forgot what kind) The other pland is an elodea...what kind of plants should I get for a beginner low tech planted tank? Because I've researched so many kinds and most I find are only "semi aquatic"...grrr! :E

Thanks for your response!
Megan :)

Yea, looks exactly what I saw at my LFS labelled as "umbrella fern". It's not aquatic and I would take it back asap.
Some other low light/tech plants you can have in a tank are java ferns, most crypts, most anubias species, elodea,
hygrophilas ( i think...i've had them grow like weeds in my tank :S), water wisteria, most swords...the list goes on!
I'm sure other members can add on anything I forgot :p

How big's the tank?
How bright is your lighting? (wattage wise)
Are you planning on dosing any ferts?

looks nice, although i would say you seem to have a LOT of substrate in there no? :D

muuuuuuch better than before!

Agree with Tizer, think you've got a bit too much substrate in there. Take some out and provide more room for your fish.

A couple of taller plants for the background would also look good.

Yea I have more sand in the front that in the back...I just set it up and I kind of was in a hurry because we had to get out of the house to go look at a car for my brother  But I'm setting up my fifty gallon soon with the same sand very soon...do you think that I can keep that extra sand in there until I set up the fifty and then just move the sand from this tank into the fifty?

It is a ten gallon: 18 inches x 10.5 inches...the sand is about 2.5 inches deep at the deepest...average is about 1 3/4 of an inch...besides some very young fry all i have in there are 4 ghost shrimp, 2 female balloon mollies, and 1 female guppy...I like to keep my tank pretty empty because I'd rather have it a little empty (so they have more space to grow and swim) than overstocked...and I'm planning on giving away the fry as soon as I can sex them...i wasn't planning on ferts but if you think i should I will :) but I have no idea what kind i'd buy! TBH, I have no idea how many watts my bulb is because I bought it months ago with no intention of going planted  I looked at the bulb and the only thing written on it is A 3/10...All I know is that it wasn't one of the cheaper ones at the store...
