ok started fishless cycle

hi all


i got my tank set up and declorinated, and as i mentioned before, i could not find any pure ammonia, so i am using fish flakes.

the tank is 168L, how much fish food do you think i should add?

and how long do u think it will take to break down and form ammonia?

Did you try a hardware store like Ace? I first looked at Walmart, Kmart, etc. without success. Most of their ammonia has additives. What Ace carried was just ammonia. That might make it go faster for you.

Urine contains ammonia so try that out. Don't do it in the morning though, wait until the afternoon or evening when you've had plenty to drink and it's not so yellow or it will take longer to cycle.

Urine? I'm sure that's not the only thing it contains. I wouldn't go with urine since I wouldn't want to be swimming in my own urine, much less somebody elses. There might be other stuff in urine that is toxic to fish so I wouldn't go with urine as a first resort.

It's fine.
Like I say drink plenty of water first so it's fresh. The fish will swim in their own unine during the cycle.
I would only recommend you pee in the tank for a fishless cycle, then their's no need for the fish to swim around in it.

Hm...Maybe I'll try that, but I won't tell me dad. OR I COULD JUST BUY A BOTTLE FOR 99 CENTS! Plus, wouldn't you be more comfortable knowing that you aren't touching your own pea when you touch the water?

I don't mean fill the whole tank up with pee you know, fill it with water then add the pee
Well i'm always splashing myself but i wash my hands afterwards so what's the difference?
Anway once the cycle is complete you won't be touching your own pee.

But the thought of it is disgusting. Plus, your pee will never fully leave the water. There will still be traces of it.

All the chemicals that make up the pee will be converted and it will be good for your tank as it will cycle quicker.
There is nothing disgusting about nature! How do you know what's in those bottles they sell in the shop? Least you know where this came from. Anyway wouldn't you feel like you'd achieved something knowing that you cycled the tank yourself naturally?

Iovay, What's improper??? it's just chemicals, if your not happy with your own, which if your a youngester is probarly for the best because it'll be high in hormo's and probarly contain stale particals from not washing proparly, ask afriend for a sample.

Sean, try a couple of cup fulls to start then test, and add more if required. I'd put plants in their too.
Seriously this works guys!

A small problem with this is high levels of testosterone could turn all your fish into men, and simarly if your a lady high estrogen levels could turn your fish into women!
Ask at the fish shop to see if their is a test kit for testosterone and estrogen levels.
A cheaper solution would be to mix your pee with the wife's or girlfriends to ensure an even balance.

or cant u even notice it, coz im sure the family wont really like a pissy tank sittin there.

also wouldnt the pee make the water acidic?

I certainly wouldn't put pee in my tanks.

It only takes 2 weeks to cycle a tank and if you can 'borrow' some filter media that's already cycled then it'll be even quicker.

I only added dechlorinator and stresszyme and my tank was cycled in 12 days.

Job done!
