it's on it's way... a 5.5 gallon canning / cookie type jar... it has a stainless lid, so I can easily drill a hole for air line or heater cord, etc... it's going in our dining room, where it will get a lot of visitor views... probably to start with, in a corner, with a window on each side... ( I think I'm going to start a Hoya vine in it ) we live in a 100 year old farm house, so the jar, will fit the theme... I'd like it in the corner window, but am concerned with algae... plants can pull out a lot of the nutrients, but there may be too much light there, & it may have to go in a more protected area... this jar is big enough, that I may be able to do a magnetic scraper, and follow the circular jar walls... but I haven't had a small tank in 30 years, so this is way out of my wheelhouse... I've gotten a small serviceable sponge filter, & I could do a circular LED light ( like on make up mirrors ) but I think natural light would be nice... I have an idea in my head for decoration, including some Marimo algae balls... but I have to have a small tank to enter those contests;)

now to decide, heated or not??? if heated I'd like a few Zebra Oto's to help on the glass... I've always wanted a red, white, & blue fancy beta ( also out of my wheelhouse ), that I want to name "Liberty" but it would be less cluttered without a heater, so maybe some white cloud minnows or ??? thoughts or suggestions

I think the tank is too small for white cloud mountain minnows. Mine are in a 10 gallon and they can still use more space to swim. Think about celestial pearl danios or emerald dwarf raspora or something else their size. One beta works.

You could fill it with alcohol and preserve fish...

There isn't enough air exchange at the surface for it to be a humane home for any fish. People do it, and make videos of it, but there are some brutal ideas out there.

My view is there are nano fish. There are no good nano tanks, unless a rectangular 5 counts. Even then, a 10 is as close to nano as I'd consider.

previously my thoughts as well... maybe a fishless tank, or cherry shrimp or ??? will have to see what works... probably most betas, kept by the average person, are in smaller tanks...

maybe...

or a couple Minnesota Vikings crabs...

Shrimp would be all I'd put in here. Round tanks are poop for fish unfortunately.

Doesn't mean you can't make a pretty planted scape, just go fishless or shrimp

I have 2 breeder colonies, in a 10 gallon that are going gang busters, in A 10 gallon, in the work area behind my main tank group downstairs... so I could stock this one for free, from that tank... I'd really like to get a couple Zebra Oto's into a tank, that visitors could see... I could probably put a couple Zebras in, with some Cherry shrimp & find a common ground on temperature???

but I've always wanted one like this...

and just about any of the Danio clan...

I bet visitors would be concentrated on the beta and not so much on the otos. And Otos might be happier in a group anyway. Shrimps though would occupy a different layer of the tank and would probably suit the tank. A colored shrimp might also be a sight to see and a news to many.

I would not keep zebra otos in that jar. If you read up on them, Seriously Fish says a tank with an 18 x 12 inch footprint as a minimum, and at least 6 of them.
I wouldn't keep a betta in the jar either. They 'prefer' longer, shallower tanks.

As other members have said, it's not really suitable for anything except shrimps.

Fish shop matt just uploaded a video a few days back on a fish bowl, slightly different shape but very similar concept and it looked really cool, I think your jar would be great to do something similar.

Are you still considering a Betta or Danios in a jar?

I've kept a few of the Danios on that gallery, and there are some I'd think about in a 10, but most that lived in 20s. I figure we have to ignore youtube people who post set ups where fish don't stand a chance at a decent captive life. There's that making the fish fit what you want issue versus preparing a tank for what they need issue that the hobby will never resolve. Byron, a late and much missed member of this forum used to be a fine advocate for the needs of the fish taking precedence, and I agree with that approach.

I'll never be a youtube star saying that, because people don't want to hear it.

edit - shrimp are a different story though.
