A family member of mine has a 10 inch albino Oscar in with a couple of almost full grown common plecos & the Oscar still fancies his chances! The Plecs don't seem too fussed by him though.

If you go the cichlid route then that will limit some of your options, convicts are extremely aggressive during mating time so dont get a mated pair.
