Well, Moes doing worse, his tummy pine coned sometime within the past three hours or so.

I need advice, ya'll.

Should I put him out of his misery, or do a heavy "down and dirty" medicating of his tank and pray? Its gotten worse, and he is getting less and less active as the days go by.

I don't want him to suffer, and he has officially pine coned. :(

Thoughts?

Keep trying, go for option number 2 today and see how he looks tomorrow :(

Sorry Becca, but I've learned that dropsy is carried in their genes, which explains why some get it and some don't :( There's nothing you could have done to prevent it :/

Poor adorable Moe.. he is obviously a mutt of the Betta pool too. (Standard veiltail from a mutt line) so it wouldn't surprise me at all if he had this gene.

Do you have a link for it? If its in his genes, he'll have this come up over and over again?

What medicine do you think it would be best to dose on heavily? i don't want to dose heavily on both, but enough in the most "probable" problem to maybe do some good...

My poor fish. :-(

The only medication I've had success with for drospy was Maracyn-Two. It saved one of my platies, but I caught it early. I've never brought back a betta who was pineconed. Good luck!!

I've never heard of that happening either  Not after they pinecone.

I'll search for a link Becca, I have so,so many betta sites on my favorites, I'll have to find where I read that. It doesn't matter that he's a mutt, it's hereditary in any betta whose ancestors carried it. Of course high nitrates and dry food are also to blame for dropsy.

Once, I had a betta with it and my lfs gave me a syringe needle and said to stick it in his belly and draw the liquid out  If you're ready to do something like that it would be worth a search on the subject, personally I couldn't do it then but I may be able to now if I had to -_-

Well, the theory on stress and genetics ( I found a page on it via google ) makes sense... stress lowers the immune system, genetic disorder kicks in.

I've heard on one pine cone recovery, once again from that site.

It involves epysom salt and some sort of medication... I might give a salt bath to see if that draws that nasty liquid out as a do or die last stand effort.... hes looking right miserable.

Bless his poor little heart, hes trying to blow a bubblenest.

How heartbreaking is that?

Very :/
Maybe, since you've been medicating for so long, he'll be ok. I know this is a longshot but maybe the pineconing is just part of the dropsy running it's course .

Its possible. We aren't giving up hope quite yet on him..

Our "Its time to put him down" is if he starts rolling on his side or if he can no longer eat.

As long as he blows bubbles, watches his mommy and daddy when they come near his tank and he is being a good lover fish, he is going to be given the best love and treatment we can.

If he gives up, well... there isn't anything anyone can do.

My poor lovely fish. :-(

Gl with Moe, i hope he gets better nd im praying pOr him!! pretty blue, if i see correctly in that photo =] go moe, hang on there fishie :D

Moe's belly grew even more overnight last night -- he can barely swim now.

I don't have a choice, I'm going to have to put him down today.

:rip:

I'm going to use the freezer method so he can just fall asleep. I can't bare the idea of having him bloodied from hitting him in a bag.

My poor fish. :(

sry becca... I think you should listen to wuv's advice... but usually I would put it to sleep... gl with yoor decision!

do not put your fish in the freezer! the fish will suffer for at least 30 minutes! cut his head off with one swift blow. this kills the fish quickly and doesnt give them much time to suffer. i hope its not too late.
