the other day whilst doing a 50%wC i forgot to unplug the heater (tuesday) and when i filled back up i heard a sizling sound and realised it was the heater so i poured water over it instantly no damage, all was well until tonight and my water temp has dropped to 22oC so ive put the back up 50 watt in (125 litre tank)

should i replace the one that appears to be not working and take it out?

In my opinion the heater is the most dangerous bit of kit in fish keeping both to us and the fish. If any doubt as to a heater's safety or reliability then replace it. The alternative could be devastating
