Poor fish...

I understand very well how hard it is to get good pictures of fish when they're swimming around in an aquarium, but actually taking them out and holding them in order to get a good picture?!! I don't know how those poor fish survive...

there was a post like this couple months ago,

it appears the fish are still wet and they would probably be put back after the photo.

but as i understand that is not a good way to hold plecos like that

I do that too!

And I think some other people in the forum does.

I feel like they actually like it. Plus the maxium I took him out was about 30 seconds

well i beleive that plecos can breath air... so its not a big deal at all as long as theyre wet :)

I noticed lots of sites where they hold the fish, its usually a pleco, :dunno:

LIKE it?!! Where is your sense?!! Taking fish out of the aquarium for any amount of time even if they are in a net is stressful, let alone HOLDING them!! And when fish get stressed out, they get sick. So unless you WANT your fish to get ich, fungus, fin rot, or practically any other disease out there, please PLEASE refrain from holding them for ANY reason except when it's ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY such as applying medications that cannot be applied any other way!!! Yes, I know, you might have held your fish before without them getting sick, but that's like playing with fire--sooner or later you're going to burned. Sooner or later your fish will get sick. Cats can be held. Lizards can be held. Birds can be held. Dogs can be held. But NOT FISH!!!!! It is NOT a good idea!!!

And fufanu--I REALLY hope you're joking--only lungfish and certain gobies breathe air. Not plecos.

As for the "other websites," plecos are probably most commonly held because they are generally very hardy fish--but holding them is still extremely bad for them!!! It only encourages diseases.

Jeez, chill out. You are way to high strung on these issues sometimes. Remember another thread where people said they enjoyed watching predatorial fish hunt live fish?

It definitely isn't good for the pleco. But it isn't quite nearly as bad as you would make it seem. Now, someone who has plecos like that would quite probably be an expert on them. Besides, these plecos are expensive! If every fish taken out of the water to be photographed suffers tremendously and dies, you would think that people would stop doing it due to the sheer cost of some of the plecos, wouldn't you?

P.T.

let me put it this way. Do you like going for swims? is swimming bad for you?

in my thoughts its exactly like taking a fish out of water and putting a person underwater. its not like they will die unless they get dried out, same as us, its not like will we die when we swim, just if we are under the water for too long.

just my $0.02

One person I know on here has taken out a fish to get a better picture of it. :shifty:

I've seen pictures in books with people holding fish in their hands. Always wondered if they were dead, going to die, or would be put back. Then again, some of them were big catfish, so they were probably caught for food. :dunno:

its commen for people to handle there plecs like that, i have done it myself, the only thing to watch out for is you! to make sure you dont get spiked by them they gave very heavey armor.

No, they don't breathe air. Their labyrinth organs can only do so much, and it is for occasional "gulps" of air. :/

Sorry... :*)

It just makes me really really mad sometimes--but I'll try to tone it down. a little. I WILL try.

And by the way, dwarf dude, tell me--while swimming might not hurt you, do you enjoy being ripped out of your house by a giant who think will probably kill you and eat you and being dumped in a pool of water against your will with your head forced underneath the water so that you can't breathe, and not being able to do anything about it? Cuz that's probably what it's like for the plecos, if not worse.

Perhaps I'm over-reacting, perhaps holding plecos isn't as terrible as I might think, but I do know for a fact that it definitely isn't good, either--from everything credible that I have ever learned, it is certainly in your fish's best interests to keep it inside the fish tank unless absolutely necessary.
