What meds would you all recommend? My LFS is closed on Wednesdays and I don't trust any other fishstores with their advice. I have shrimp, and live rock.....so I know this will limit my choices............

How long has the tank been established? What are you seeing, and on which fish? Don't assume it is ich. As for doing anything, well that is also tricky but your best bet is probably a product called No-Ich or Kick Ich (same things).

But it may be, depending on what you see, that you don't need to do anything.

Get yourself a couple cleaner shrimp and maybe a cleaner goby or wrasse.

A UV light will keep it from spreading from fish to fish, they run about $100.00 or check will friends to see if anyone has one that you can use, I loan mine out from time to time. UV and meds is the best way to get rid of it. Even if you put the infected fish in a quarantine tank your main tank will still have it in the water because ick is water born, I perfer to treat one tank instead of two.

You're right there, RamJet, but if you put all your fish(es) into the quarantine tank, they can be succesfully treated with copper, or other antibiotics that would be lethal to any invertebrates in the main tank.

This only works if all of the fish have it, though.

Since Olive has no quarantine tank, this doesn't matter much. Olive, do you have corals, or other inverts?

Salt bath? You really want to minimize added stress to the fish. UV can be a good idea. But you can safely add the Kick Ich product to the tank following the directions -- I believe Kent marine makes one and there's another ... No Ich I am pretty sure is the name. Same guy that makes the No-Cyano.

Cleaner shrimp will keep the fish happy, as they eat the ich parasites (and others). So will the cleaner goby and cleaner wrasse I mentioned.

the tank has been established around four months.

I am seeing small, white spots on my clowns' bodies and fins, also on my tang's fins. Also, the male clown is the worst. He has the most concentration of the spots, although they aren't as pronounced as the ick I see in the freshwater fish. I almost can't see them unless I am right up on him and he is turned a certain way, but I do know he didn't look that way when we got him. He also looks like he isn't as colorful, and there seems to be an evelope of film on him.

Don't assume it is ich

Okay, I wont.....but it sure looks like it to me. The fish are also flashing.

I have a banded gobie that is constantly eating the sand and spitting out the clean sand through his gills. He has done an amazing job on getting the brown algae population to nill.........would that be enough?

I also have a coral banded shrimp, and an arrow crab. Do I need a different kind of shrimp? Maybe a peppermint shrimp?

I have a Scott's fairy wrasse on hold at the LFS until quarantine is over, would that be a type of cleaner wrasse? I haven' talked to the LFS about it much, I just know that it is reef safe, so that is why I put him on hold.

I thought about that. I am seriously considering it. Alas, I have no friends that keep fish, they think I am a weirdo. I will have to buy it. :/

Olive, do you have corals, or other inverts?

Well, as far as corals, none yet except what is trying to grow on the live rock. We have some amazing colors coming up slowly, but I am not sure if you would classify them as a "coral" persey yet.....

also have an emerald crab, arrow crab, coral banded shrimp, blue knuckled crab, red hermit crab, and around 15 snails.

You could try a freshwater dip. but I think this only works if you add a little bit salt to the water up to the same as the tank (just make sure to use a big bowl (preferably one without a curved to, we want as much air exchange as possible)). the freshwater causes the parasites to die quickly because they cannot adjust to the sudden change, it also does stress out your fish. it may be too risky, but I was aware that medication doesn't get rid of ich, but only kills the swimming form, right? in which case a freshwater dip may be the only way.

A good ingredient for a freshwater dip is Methlyne Blue. It is normally used in stains, but it kills bacteria and soothes stressed fish.

The shrimp that you would need is called the Common Cleaner Shrimp.

thanks landlocked, I have seen those shrimp before and I really want one, so that is cool! The methelyne blue won't hurt the live rock?

I have never had desieses with fish... well not since Istarted using RO watter.
But, I am interested in UV... I was wondering how long the bulbs are effective for assuming you run them 24-7
But, you only run them when there is a problem right?

Right. Because they kill ALL bacteria that pass through, they shouldn't be left on all the time. Good water conditions does not mean sterile conditions.

I'm not sure whether methelyne blue will hurt the live rock or not. It might . . . I'd ask around and see what anyone else says. Wouldn't want to cause a problem
