I was told to stay away from Odessa barbs if I planned to have any kind of tetras or anything with longer fins such as gouramis because they can become quite nippy. I do love the odessa barbs and when they mature they are beautiful. Im having very naughty thoughts of getting rid of the goldfish and setting up a barb only tank because I love all kinds.

ok mate cheers i thought they were quiet nippy but thought i would ask

I heard they can be nippy, but when it comes down to it, most fish are. Yes, that includes zebra danios and neon tetras.

In comparison to say, tiger barbs or buenos aires tetras, odessas are pretty peaceful. I think they'd be fine with the gourami if kept in sufficient numbers. However, it also comes down to tank size, I've seen that these guys are very active, and can get a good 3 inches or so, if you ask me a 3 foot long tank is minimum for a school. It also may not even be their nipping, but rather their boisterous swimming behavior, that can cause your other fish to go into hiding. Not the best choice, in my opinion.

However, if you ask me, you'd be better off adding numbers to the schooling fish you already have rather than adding another school. Both neon tetras and zebra danios are stunning in large schools, it's a crime to keep them in the minimum recommended numbers in my eyes. Just some food for the thought.

i was told by my lfs a week ago when i got pentazona barbs to stay away from bigger barbs like tigers etc as they can be nippy, but ones i got are peaceful

Tank size is everything here. I got 6 fully grown odessas from a previous owner of my tank, the odessas shared the tank with all sorts of tetras and they were fine, but it is a four foot tank

Ive just got some albino tigers and they dont bother the tetras really, bigger tetras would be best though

Pentazona barbs get much bigger than tigers and odessas. Size has nothing to do with it.

everyone as different opnions and experiences,i was told by lfs they would be fine,i was told tigers and rosy was most aggressive,my neons and danios are full size.i have a 4 foot tank.sometimes i think u maybe have to just test things out some things work for people and others dont.my tetras and danios have never been nippy.

I've got 9 Odessa barbs in my community tank and they just fight amongst themselves. But its all depependent on temperment. I've got a gourami in with mine and hes fine. Nothing with long flowing fins though. But they seem ok in mine.

the salifins and catfish and plec would u say they are long flowing fins?the lfs had them in and they caught my eye thats all
