If you want to breed them but not get that many, why don't you scoop out some of the eggs?
:X ....

I'm sorry, but this seems soo messed up to me. And its not the way she should deal with this, at all. If she doesn't have the 40-50 gallon tank to grow out the naturally-born number of fry she gets, she shouldn't breed. Throwing away babies is just a gross waste of life to me T_T. No one should be spawning fish if they're just going to scoop out 80 eggs and leave a *manageable* amount. ughh, whats the point?

It's a perfectly good suggestion if the person is determined to breed anyway and there's no way to convince them not to. :|
Better they die as a lump of no more than a few cells than grow into an individual that has the capacity to suffer if kept in less than ideal conditions.

Synirr, thanks for sticking up for me.

I was just trying to give her suggestions because she has bred VT before and was seemingly adament about trying again. Besides, like Synirr said, it's better never having developed past cell stage than dying as a living breathing creature.
I've seen several people suggest scooping eggs right after their released on this forum.

Anyway, to the girl who started this thread, I hope some if this stuff is helping you.

I think she's taken a walk -_- hope she reads the thread anyway and the pinned articles too and takes all the questions asked into proper consideration, even if she has bred VT's before that doesn't mean she knows what she is doing or is going about it in the right way- so many people seem to have the notion that once they have bred any fish they are an expert on it and they know whats best for the fish -_- its the same problem with livebearers and people :/ .

I agree with you too elise, destroying some of the eggs may make the breeding more managable but you have to ask yourself if you cannot raise the bettas normally, should you be breeding them at all?
There are many fish i'd like to breed in the future but i will not attempt it until i know i am ready and have the knolege and equipment/space/money to do so.

I wonder though why people get so fixed in thought of breeding fish though?? I think some fish are much better off being left unbred from, and being a responsable fish keeper is also about having the fish's best interests in mind and not your own- maybe you should tell her that, even if she gets offended, its only stating fact that she should bear in mind at the top of her values in fish/betta keeping.

I totally agree. I think most people want to breed fish because they're pretty and they want to see if they can make more pretty fish. I want to breed but I want to look into the genetics side of the whole thing (this will go towards my thesis---for college). But I wouldn't attempt it just because it sounds cool. And when I get ready to breed, I will have the set up and resources to do it right and two fish from a breeder.

But, as a general rule, I'm against all kinds of "backyard" breeders. I'm in the rescue business for cats and dogs so I think breeding should be left to the professional breeders. I just had to rescue my new 8 mo aussie from a backyard breeder mishap.
