OK these past 2 weeks have been horrible with my fish :grr:. Anyway, for the last 5 days now my Betta has decided that he no longer will eat his pellets. I went through this with him when I first got him, the LFS fed him flakes, so essentially I had to wean him from flakes to pellets, which took me 9 days to do. So up until 5 days ago he was happily eating his pellets, but now just stopped will not eat them at all. So today I had to give him flakes otherwise he would have been 5 complete days with out food (not a huge deal but still), and of course he ate the flakes. How bad is it truly for him to be getting flake food all the time? Is there flakes specifically for Bettas?

Here is the feeding schedule:

Friday Fast day and WC day
Saturday Pellets (now flakes)
Sunday Pellets
Monday Peas (didn't give him this week as I was trying to get him to eat his pellets)
Tuesday Pellets
Wednesday Pellets
Thursday Peas

The last day he ate was last Friday after his water change, it was suppose to be his fast day, but I gave him 2 blood worms for a treat ... and yes he has been pooing normally, behaviour is better than ever, absolutely no problems with him at all just no longer will eat pellets.

Thanks

Although pellets will do, they are not recommended for bettas. I suggest getting a few different premium quality gourmet flakes, and feed him a different type every day, 2 or 3 different types of flakes. The recommended food for bettas is bloodworms, brine shrimp, or flakes. Hope this helps. :good:

I have seen betta flakes and betta 'crisps' (like a cross between a flake and a pellet) in a few pet stores.

I've never heard flakes recommended over pellets . . .

I've always been told that flakes can lead to constipation and even swimbladder problems. I know this is often the case with goldfish and I believe it happens with bettas too.

If you do feed a flake, make sure it is a betta flake and not just "TetraMin" or some other bog-standard community product.

I feed my betta TetraBetta flakes as well as Hikari pellets and he loves both of them, though he goes a bit more nuts for the flakes. He gets pellets in the morning and flake at night. The only problem with flakes is they are messier than pellets and it is harder to monitor exactly how much he is getting. However, my kuhli loaches also love the flakes and will eat any leftovers. If you feed him a high quality flake then I would have thought he'll be okay.

Thanks, I will have to look for some Betta flakes.

I've always fed mine Tetra crushed flakes ( just to make them easier to eat ) with no trouble at all. None of my LFS's sell pellets or flakes specifically for bettas, not even the hikari.

I also feed every other day as opposed to each day. It keeps waste low, they eat all of what I put in ( a small pinch in the morning and one in the evening ) and I feed live foods ocasionally as a treat. I sometimes give Bronson a shrimp pellet or two to play with.

I've not heard of any real problems with flake foods other than bettas not wanting to eat them due to being used to pellets.

 seems I am having the opposite problem. I know my LFS has Betta pellets, but haven't seen betta flakes, or maybe just missed them as I wasn't really looking for them, I always thought Bettas = pellets. But I will see what they have. I have been feeding him the Wardley's flakes, only because those are the only flakes I have right now, but he seems to like them. I figured something was better than nothing :good:
