I'm off to find a small hole to curl-up and weep uncontrollaby in :-(

first year of fishkeeping i religiously cleaned my filter under the tap until it was sparkling, my first tank, roughly 30gals contained bala sharks, kissing gouramis and common plecs.

time to dig up an old thread http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=169836

Just wanted to say something to keep your chin up! I had just been given the best wedding present by my husband - a nice 30 gallon tank. I started to do research on fish and discovered that I should only add a few very hardy fish at first to help start the nitrate cycle. Then my husband supprised me one day with a tank full of fish four days after we had set it up (he really was doing this to be sweet, and I really appreciated it) In a few days my ammonium levels skyrocketed, of course, and I lost a beautiful angelfish. :( I kept going to the petstore to get remedies for my ammonium levels and they kept selling me things. Eventually I got info from an old pro who told me to do large (25%) water changes every day until they leveled out. Eventually everything did (actually adding a plant really helped too). I only lost one fish and they're all doing fine.
