No Def my Dad didn't live in Elizabethan times, he was born in 1925 and died in April this year. Among other things he was a gentleman, and an ex-soldier who had some awful past experiences.Part of the idea of fishkeeping was because the pleasure I got from him, and his fish was one of my special memories. Since he died my Mother's health has deteriorated to the point that it's unlikely she will be able to live independently much longer, and I already have two disabled kids.......
sorrry just realised this is a sob story u ain't gonna wanna hear

I just wanted something for me something that took me away for a minute or two if that's wrong I'm sorry.

But you're more wrong flaming and stuff, and your a total discredit to this site, because up until now I have received nothing but help and support. I'll say no more - I for one am NOT into flaming

For all the other advice and encouragement - THANKYOU.

Bloopie & Firebelle_uk, I understand what both of you are wanting to do. Unfortunately, fishkeeping does require a commitment. You have to have time for weekly maintanence which shouldn't take more than 20 to 30 minutes on a single tank. With 5 tanks, I spend a couple hours a week doing water changes. Since the tanks are all fully cycled, I rarely do water tests any more. Some people may find fault with that but I am extremely comfortable with my water parameters. I added new fish last week to 2 tanks and resumed my testing until I was sure that I wasn't going to see any ammonia or nitrite spikes.

If you take the time and do it right (fishless cycle) it will be relatively easy and you will get loads of enjoyment from it. For you Firebelle_uk, it would probably be great therapy for your mom and kids. As for your dad not messing with tests and water changes, I think that was pretty common until the last few years when people began to learn more and more about fish and what their needs are. It may have worked for him but probably wasnt' the best thing for the fish.

By skipping the fishless cycling process and putting fish in immediately, you will constantly be fighting to keep your ammonia and nitrite levels down to acceptable, non-toxic levels. That will probably take 6 weeks to 6 months depending on how large your tank is and how often you add fish. Everytime you add more fish, the process will start over again.

Good luck to both of you with what ever road you decide to take.
